Abstract:

This collection of 19 documents is about the Wogeo, who call themselves Wageva, and are the Melanesian inhabitants of the island of Wogeo off the north coast of Papua New Guinea. Most of the documents in this collection are by the ethnographer Herbert Ian Hogbin, who did fieldwork in 1933, 1934 and 1948. The other paper, by Sacks, is a critique of Hogbin's work on Wogeo land tenure system. Hogbin's work includes a general overview of Wogeo culture and discussions on a variety of topics, including economy, land tenure, a dispute narrative, trade, pregnancy, child birth and infant care, marriage, sexual life, childrearing, adoption, crime, sorcery, magic, religion, kinship terms, and feasting.
