'The miracles of technology' is a series of books dating from before World War I. They were first published starting in 1906, as a series of five books, and later (1910?) as a series of six books - the original five books, plus an additional book with a Physics focus.
The books aim to provide an overview of the developments in technology for a non-techical (19th-century) audience. They do a better job at popularizing than at limiting themselves to technology in a strict sense, and consequently a broad spectrum of topics is discussed, such as ancient cultures, mining, the construction of railroads, cannons, soap, ships, submarines, zeppelins etcetera, telephony, telegraphy, trade, chemistry, electricity and medicine.
For those who can't read Dutch, the books are nice to browse through shortly because of the black & white photo's, some of which are unintentionally funny now. But if you do master Dutch, they also provide an interesting read: by placing yourself in the position of a 19-th century reader, you can both be amazed by how different his world was from a technological point of view, and by how different his political world view must have been. Also given the great enthusiasm with which the latest developments in weaponry are described, you can almost read these 'technical' books as a prelude to World War 1 written by a some ancient geeks.
