Every classroom needs and deserves a visiting teacher like Ms. Mirabel. During a memorable six week period, this colorful poet teaches fourth grade kids how to write and express themselves. As she tells them ““I, myself, write to change my life, to make it come out the way I want it to,”. The kids open up and begin to tell about their lives. Newbery medalist, Patricia MacLachlan uses all her own considerable skills as a writer in this book. The book looks deceptively simple because of the large type face and white space. It looks like a beginning chapter book which it is but that is like saying E. B. White’s Charlotte’s Web is just a story about a pig. This book has real children with real problems who learn important lessons. I highly recommend this book for students in grades 3-5 and their teachers. It would make a wonderful read aloud or literature circle book.
