In his Preface, the editor explains that Goldsmith continued to correct his works as they appeared in editions. He explains here why he chose some editions for this "Works" rather than others. He further recorded variant publishers' and booksellers' statements from some of the copies he used.
Illustrations are printed on plates, with a tissue guardsheet.
Frontispieces by Arthur I. Keller, Albert Sterner, Charles Houghton, F. Luis Mora, W.P. Snyder are signed by them. Portraits throughout are unsigned.
