Originally issued in parts. "The quarto parts of the Illustrated Record were printed during the Exhibition in the east nave of the Crystal Palace, the illustrations on an Adams Press and the text on a Taylor Press. [The two presses are described and illustrated on page 60.] Putnam's intention was to publish twenty-six weekly numbers containing four double-column pages of text and four pages each of illustrations and advertisements. Instead, between July 14, 1853 and January 1854 they issued seven semi-monthly double numbers and three quadruple numbers."--E. Coleman, "The exhibition in the Palace", in Bulletin of the New York Public Library 32 (1960), pages 468-469.
The plates include the engraved title, 1 chromoxylograph of tile patterns and 5 wood engravings. A deluxe issue, advertised as available in 1855, added 12 photographs (salted paper prints).
The wood-engraved plates and text illustrations are by J.W. and N. Orr, T. Cox, H. Jewitt, Leslie & Hooper, N. Levy, J.H. Richardson, W. Roberts, Whitney, Jocelyn, & Annin, and others after daguerreotypes by H. Whittemore (see page [vi]).
