After reading this book, it is hard to look at the world around me quite the same. The book questions what would happen if humans would totally disappear off the face of the earth. How long would it take for buildings, roads, dams- anything man made- to crumble and fall apart? One tends to think that the skyscrapers and bridges can last forever, but without constant maintenance, they can fall apart quicker than you would imagine. The author, Alan Weisman, also talks about other impacts humans have on the earth from agriculture (changing the makeup of soil to grow more stuff) to garbage (will plastics ever decompose?).
This was a great book- it made me think while I was reading it, and it still makes me think today when I look at all the stuff around me. While humans have made incredible impacts on the earth, she can still shrug us off and forget about us.
