Captures the spirit of this delightful Broadway show   (2009-01-09)
While the movie was described by Roger Ebert as "...a mushy and limp musical fantasy, so insubstantial it keeps evaporating before our eyes" the musical on Broadway manages to delight audiences, because it takes the best aspects of the movie, which include the music, and then they showcased the talents of the strong cast, including Kerry Butler as Clio/Kira, Cheyenne Jackson as Sonny, and Broadway veteran performer Tony Roberts as Danny/Zeus. They manage to poke fun at the movie at the same time they are telling the story. They also recreate the energy of the 1980 California with roller skates, leg warmers, short shorts, disco balls and music of the Electric Light Orchestra.
Douglas Carter Beane wrote an excellent adaption of the book. According to the press Xanadu, "tells the story of one of the nine muses of ancient Greece who comes to earth to inspire the greatest of artistic achievements – a roller disco. Along the way she falls in love, bumps into an old acquaintance and for the first time, feels the desire to create herself."
Xanadu played on Broadway for 49 previews and 512 regular performances, and then closed on September 23, 2008 before beginning a national tour to the La Jolla Playhouse and Chicago's Drury Lane Theatre. An Asian tour in underway for Korea, China, the Phillipines as well as to Australia.
Xanadu received four 2008 Tony Award nominations, including one for Best Musical.
