Abstract:

Andreas Reischek went to New Zealand in 1877, at the instance of Ferdinand Hochstetter, the famous geologist, to do nothing more exciting than arrange a museum at Christchurch under the directorship of Sir Julius van Haast. His engagement was for two years. He stayed for twelve, but not in one place. With his faithful Caesar, he wandered through New Zealand from top to bottom. English and Maori alike esteemed him as a pioneer of the true breed. His own fascinating story of his adventures and discoveries is a treasure contribution to New Zealand's history.
