Abstract:

"In 1889, 800 Russian Jews landed in Argentina and became stranded on the desolate pampas. Their only neighbors were gauchos, wandering cowboys descended from Spanish settlers and the vanquished Indians. News of the desperate plight of these Russian Jews reached Baron de Hirsch, a Jewish philanthropist who had built the Orient Expresss. Hirsch, long concerned with the plight of persecuted Russian Jews, turned his attention to Argentina. His vision: a new way of life for Jews as farmers on the South American frontier."
