Summary:
"Many a true word is spoken in jest." This sage remark applies to this witty and winsome collection of Zen stories and koans interpreted through the medium of the comic strip. The Old Monk, however, is not jesting as he and his No. 1 Disciple spread the doctrine of Buddhism with sudden flashes of self-enlightenment. These apparently nonsensical conundrums - more than fifty in all - make more sense than many profound  Read more...

The Old Monk, however, is not jesting as he and his No. 1 Disciple spread the doctrine of Buddhism with sudden flashes of self-enlightenment. These apparently nonsensical conundrums - more than fifty in all - make more sense than many profound philosophies. A koan is a paradox in Zen Buddhism used as an instrument of meditation in training monks to reject ultimate dependence upon reason and to force them into sudden, intuitive understanding. The Old Monk, a quaint, whimsical, and unforgettable character, resolves his disciples' dilemmas in many ways - usually with ironic, rapier-like verbal thrusts, but sometimes with an "enlightening" clout on the head. Ioanna Salajan's drawings are evocative, the questions provocative, and sometimes the reader must provide his own answers to such sticklers as "What was your face before your parents were born?" and "Even a good thing isn't as good as no thing." In the case of Zen Comics, a good book is much better than no book. These constructive comics were published privately, with almost instant success in Holland and England, and now the demand for their insight is fast growing in the infinite world of Zen."@en ;
