Sigmar Polke : we petty bourgeois! : comrades and contemporaries, the 1970s by Sigmar Polke( Book )
8 editions published between 2011 and 2014 in English and held by 216 libraries worldwide
Sigmar Polke's group of works entitled "We petty bourgeois! : comrades and contemporaries" of 1974-76 was forgotten for a long time. A collection of large-format gouaches on paper, it depicts a wealth of permeating and overlapping figures, traces, signs, and quotations drawn from contemporaneous popular culture. This volume presents this work, and his entire production from the 1970s, including drawing, painting, and photography
8 editions published between 2002 and 2010 in German and English and held by 165 libraries worldwide
Gerhard Richter : images of an era by Gerhard Richter( Book )
1 edition published in 2011 in English and held by 150 libraries worldwide
This volume presents and describes 50 of the artist's works with essays by leading Richter experts. It also includes personal testimonials in previously unpublished letters as well as a conversation between Gerhard Richter and Richter expert Uwe Schneede. This book provides new insight into the complexity of Richter's imagery in which banality and evil confront one another: the dreams and aspirations of the times, fast cars and new travel possibilities; personal memories; the oppressive past; contemporary politics; and both trivial and meaningful everyday objects. The cycle 18 Oktober 1977 (1988), which deals with the death of members of the Red Army Faction ('Baader-Meinhof gang') plays an important role in our understanding of the evocative power of these pictures from the 1960s. Richter's intense preoccupation with this event concludes this group of paintings from photographs. This cycle, which was loaned to the Bucerius Kunst forum in Hamburg by the New York Museum of Modern Art, has led to a new interpretation and positioning of Richter's work
Formlose Möbel by Sebastian Hackenschmidt( Book )
13 editions published in 2008 in German and English and held by 149 libraries worldwide
"In the mid-sixites, countless artists discovered the formless as a starting point for their experiments with materials. The maxim "form follows material," however, was not only proclaimed in the area of Object art, it had a distinct impact on furniture design as well. ... this extensive exploration ... is the first of its kind to concentrate on the various aspects and features of the formless in furniture design, elaborately illuminating the interaction between the avant-garde and the applied arts as well as the shifting concepts of formlessness. In addition, the examination of current design approaches, as computer-assisted "blobjects", for instance, shows that to this day, designers playfully oppose so-called good form and recognize the formless as the opportunity for remodelling aesthetics."--Back cover

Plastizität : eine Kunstgeschichte des Veränderlichen by Dietmar Rübel( Book )
5 editions published in 2012 in German and held by 72 libraries worldwide

A world of wild doubt by seit 1817 (Hamburg) Der Kunstverein( Book )
6 editions published in 2013 in German and English and held by 53 libraries worldwide
The starting point of this exhibition and subsequent publication is the novel 'The Man Who Was Thursday' by British poet G.K. Chesterton from 1908. The atmospheres conjured up in the book, ranging from discomfort to paranoia, resonate in many ways with the present. In a time when the German intelligence service enables assassinations by neo-Nazis, or criminal banksters loot globalized financial markets, political-philosophical ambiguity, as described by Chesterton with its causes and consequences, is as red hot as the question of whether a system can be reformed from within or has to be detonated by a coming insurrection. Thus, the exhibition and book fuse the skepticism of classical modernity toward absolute freedom with contemporary attitudes. Additionally, the curators and editors have formulated a criticism of the dominance of neoliberal and plutocratic models of society. But The Man Who Was Thursday is also a defense of nonsense

2 editions published in 2013 in German and held by 33 libraries worldwide

Alicja Kwade by Alicja Kwade( Book )
2 editions published in 2015 in German and held by 17 libraries worldwide
The exhibition opens with the sculpture "I am other" (2001) presenting a new look at duplicity, mirror images and parallel realities. At the centre of this exploration is the work "Nissan" (Parallel World 1 + 2) (2009) comprised of two silver cars, identical in every scratch, dent and detail, but as a mirror image. The artist's new works reflect her earlier sculptures through recurring motifs. One such motif is champagne bottles: ground and formed into sand cones in “412 empty litres to the start” (2008) and now filled with lead in the “The heavy weight of lively light” (2015). Kwade reveals the unequal relationships between material, economic, ideological and aesthetic values. In “Curbstone jewels” (2008-10), she cut and polished stones from the street into the familiar shapes of precious jewels. In another recent series she shows the relative market relationship between the value of industrial metals on the stock market. Alicja Kwade has a tremendous feel for the relationship between material, surface and space. With her concise, sculptural language she makes complex themes visible and accessible. 00Exhibition: Kunsthalle Mannheim, Germany (02.07-06-09.2015)
