"Salter's life and work bridged two continents and cultures and spanned the political turmoil of the mid-twentieth century. He survived both world wars, the rise of National Socialism in Germany, and permanent exile in a new land, but nothing halted his tireless and brilliant design work. Classic Book Jackets tells Salter's story and describes the innovative thinking he brought to his clients and students (including his designation of seven jacket types that are still valid today). It includes more than two hundred reproductions of his finest works as well as a complete catalog of his jackets, designs, and lettering jobs for the book trade."--Jacket

"The issue of Poe's competence in the field of German language and literature is central to understanding his creative method. For over one hundred years readers have been intrigued by the spate of references to German literature in his works, by his scoffs at German scholarship, and by his extensive use of quotations in German to embellish his texts. Did Poe actually speak or read this language? Did he know Goethe and E. T. A. Hoffmann in the original? Could he read Schlegel and Kant in German well enough for these thinkers to have directly influenced his aesthetics?"--BOOK JACKET. "Definitive answers to such questions are long overdue and will lay to rest much speculation about Poe's relationship to German sources. This study sorts through Poe's Germanic references to understand his complex connection with German language, literature and culture. It examines his quotations and his statements about German writers, while viewing Poe within the discourse of Germanism that surrounded writers of the Gothic fantastic in the 1830s and 1840s. Although evidence is scattered and complex, the conclusions are straightforward: Poe's knowledge of the German language and its culture represented a second-hand familiarity of phrases and opinions that he found entirely in English-language sources. The conclusions of this study are significant, for they correct a tradition of time-worn assumptions within Poe scholarship."--BOOK JACKET

The private Heinrich Himmler : letters of a mass murderer by Heinrich Himmler (

"At the end of World War II, it was assumed that the letters of Heinrich Himmler were lost. Yet sixty years after Himmler's capture by British troops and subsequent suicide, the letters mysteriously turned up in Tel Aviv and, in early 2014, excerpts were published for the first time by the Israeli newspaper Yediot Aharonot providing a rare, if jarring, glimpse into the family life of one of Hitler's top lieutenants while he was busy organizing the mass extermination of the Jews. It was generally held that Himmler, once appointed head of the SS, blended seamlessly into the Nazi hierarchy. The image that emerges, however, is more subtle. Himmler is seen here as a man whose observations can often be characterized by their unpleasant banality; a man whose obsession with family life ran alongside a brutal detachment from all things human, a serial killer who oversaw the persecution and extermination of all Jews and other non-Aryans, and those opposed to the regime. His letters remove any doubt that he was the architect of the Final Solution, and a man who was much closer to Hitler than many historians previously thought. The letters in this edition were arranged by Katrin Himmler, the great-niece of Heinrich and Marga Himmler while Michael Wildt, a renowned expert on the Nazi regime, provides historical context to the letters and their author. The entire work was translated by Thomas S. Hansen and Abby J. Hansen"--

This fascinating book presents the first cultural history and anthropology of the face across centuries, continents, and media. Ranging from funerary masks and masks in drama to the figural work of contemporary artists including Cindy Sherman and Nam June Paik, renowned art historian Hans Belting emphasizes that while the face plays a critical role in human communication, it defies attempts at visual representation. Belting divides his book into three parts: faces as masks of the self, portraiture as a constantly evolving mask in Western culture, and the fate of the face in the age of mass media. Referencing a vast array of sources, Belting's insights draw on art history, philosophy, theories of visual culture, and cognitive science. He demonstrates that Western efforts to portray the face have repeatedly failed, even with the developments of new media such as photography and film, which promise ever-greater degrees of verisimilitude. In spite of sitting at the heart of human expression, the face resists possession, and creative endeavors to capture it inevitably result in masks--hollow signifiers of the humanity they're meant to embody. From creations by Van Eyck and August Sander to works by Francis Bacon, Ingmar Bergman, and Chuck Close, "Face and Mask" takes a remarkable look at how, through the centuries, the physical visage has inspired and evaded artistic interpretation
