Most of the trees were short snags (wildlife trees) created by a feller buncher during logging operations. Other trees were located in tree islands retained during logging as wildlife habitat, or were those that had naturally occurring broken tops or were normal untopped trees found among the short snags. Tree attributes recorded in the project included the use of tree cavities by birds or mammals, tree decay condition, tree diameter & species, and the names & activities of birds found in the study area
Wildlife tree maintenance and creation in managed ESSF forests in the Mackenzie District by Rick Dawson( Book )
1 edition published in 1992 in English and held by 1 library worldwide
This report describes a study to be conducted in the Donna Creek drainage system about 80 kilometres north-west of Mackenzie, British Columbia in the Engelmann spruce subalpine fir (ESSF) biogeoclimatic subzone. The study is intended to implement & test a number of forest harvesting techniques specially designed to maintain wildlife tree habitats through time in managed forests. In each of three cutblocks, four logging treatments and their effects on habitat use by breeding birds & furbearers are to be investigated: conventional clearcutting (control); retaining short snags as wildlife trees; retaining islands of uncut timber; and combining the 2nd & 3rd treatments. Information is included on cutblock selection, treatment & control areas, data collection & monitoring methods, and data analysis. Appendices include a discussion of alternate methods for sampling breeding birds and copies of forms to be used in data collection
