The Chicano Latino comics collection (1990-2015) consists of comic books, zines, and posters that were written, illustrated, and in some instances, published by Chicano/Latino artists. With the exception of Michael Aushenker, prominent author of the series, ‘The Nine Lives of El Gato, the Chicano Latino Comics collection is primarily comprised of comic books by Latino/a artists. Comic book collaborations between well-known Latino artists such as Rafael Navarro and non-Hispanic authors such as Mike Wellman are included in the collection. Other prominent artists represented in the Chicano Latino comics collection include Octavio Rodriguez, Crystal Gonzalez, the Hernandez brothers, Mario, Gilbert, and Javier, J. Gonzo, and Carlos Saldaña. The primary language used throughout the collection is English, however, Spanish words and phrases can often be found interspersed in the titles and stories of the comic books and zines. The zines in Series II were authored and published by Latina artists, Brenda Montaño and Liz Mayorga. The zines consist of poetry and short stories with accompanying art work by the authors. Among other themes, these self-published zines deal with issues of feminism, identity, and the Chicana/Latina experience in America
