This book of pericopes from a chronicle of twenty-three years represents only about a third of the whole. It is incumbent on me, therefore, to explain my principles of selection. But readableness-comparative readableness, anyway is the only one. It is the reason that the fifties are so thinly represented, for my actual notes covering the first decade of my association with Stravinsky are more voluminous than those dealing with the second decade, but they are in no sense written-up, and are personal in a way that this book is not. They can be used only in the different medium of the biography

For the last twenty-three years of Igor Stravinsky's incredibly full life, the noted musician, conductor, and writer Robert Craft was his closest colleague and friend, a trusted member of the Stravinsky household, and an important participant in virtually all of the composer's worldwide activities. Throughout these years, Craft kept a detailed diary, impressive in its powers of observation and characterization. This diary forms the basis for Stravinsky: Chronicle of a Friendship, now released in this substantially revised and enlarged edition.
