Zwischen 1853 und 1855 entstanden die zwei bedeutenden Romane "Egy magyar nábob" (Ein ungarischer Nabob) und die Fortsetzung, "Kárpáthy Zoltán" (Zoltán Kárpáthy), die die Auseinandersetzungen der Reformzeit thematisieren. Der alte, rückständige Kárpáthy, Hauptheld des ersten Romans, verbringt seine Tage mit Nichtstun, Essen und Trinken in Gesellschaft der Kleinadligen der Gegend. Sein Neffe Abellino führt in der Hoffnung auf das zu erwartende Erbe ein ähnliches Leben in Paris. Diese Hoffnung zerschlägt sich allerdings, als János Kárpáthy sich eine blutjunge Frau nimmt, die ihm einen Sohn schenkt. Jókai schildert in prächtigen Anekdoten und Genrebildern, der bevorzugten Gattung der romantischen Volkstümlichkeit, das Wesen von Menschentypen, vornehmlich den ungarischen Adligen in der so genannten Reformzeit. Fast unberührt von politischen Bewegungen oder Ideologien stellt er die Fehler und Unzulänglichkeiten seiner Figuren dar, aus den charakterlichen Mängeln entspringt sein Humor. In der Darstellung des Helden in Kárpáti Zoltán zeigt sich Jókais optimistische Fabulierfreude, die idealistisch verklärte Zeichnung seiner Person hat durchaus märchenhafte Züge. Die Vermischung realistischer Erzählweisen mit märchenhaften Momenten machte den grossen Erfolg beim damaligen Lesepublikum im In- und Ausland aus. (Zitat aus hunlit.hu)
