Harpers Ferry : a play about John Brown by Barrie Stavis( Book )
9 editions published between 1960 and 1967 in English and held by 395 libraries worldwide
This play is a dramatic rendering of john brown's attack on the armory at harpers ferry and his subsequent trial for treason. Although it adheres to the facts of history, they are not treated realistically. "Harpers ferry" portrays brown as possessing a pure idealism untainted in the slightest degree by materialism or self-seeking, which elevates him to heroic stature. It shows that a man of such character can act only as he believes right--that although brown may not have been right and his way of attacking the institution of slavery may not have been intelligent, it was brown's way. The play is briefly introduced by tyrone guthrie, director of the first production, and includes a preface by the author, "john brown--the power of the ethical imperative," and production notes describing the set and lighting. The play was first produced by the minnesota theatre company at the tyrone guthrie theatre in minneapolis on june 3, 1967. (this book was published in new york by A.S. barnes and company, and in london by thomas yoseloff ltd.) (dl)
