The theory of economic development; an inquiry into profits, capital, credit, interest, and the business cycle by Joseph A Schumpeter( Book )
220 editions published between 1912 and 2017 in 4 languages and held by 2,466 libraries worldwide
Overview: Schumpeter proclaims in this classical analysis of capitalist society first published in 1911 that economics is a natural self-regulating mechanism when undisturbed by "social and other meddlers." In his preface he argues that despite weaknesses, theories are based on logic and provide structure for understanding fact. Of those who argue against him, Schumpeter asks a fundamental question: "Is it really artificial to keep separate the phenomena incidental to running a firm and the phenomena incidental to creating a new one?" In his answers, Schumpeter offers guidance to Third World politicians no less than First World businesspeople. In his substantial new introduction, John E. Elliott discusses the salient ideas of The Theory of Economic Development against the historical background of three great periods of economic thought in the last two decades
History of economic analysis by Joseph A Schumpeter( Book )
164 editions published between 1952 and 2001 in 5 languages and held by 2,294 libraries worldwide
"At the time of his death in 1950, Joseph Schumpeter - one of the great economists of the first half of the 20th century - was working on his monumental History of Economic Analysis. A complete history of efforts to understand the subject of economics from ancient Greece to the present, this book is an important contribution to the history of ideas as well as to economics. Although never fully completed, it has gained recognition as a modern classic due to its broad scope and original examination of significant historical events." "Complete with a new introduction by Mark Perlman, who outlines the structure of the book and puts Schumpeter's work into current perspective. History of Economic Analysis remains a reflection of Schumpeter's diverse interest in history, philosophy, sociology, and psychology."--Publisher description

Schumpeter : a biography by Richard Swedberg( Book )
1 edition published in 1998 in Italian and held by 20 libraries worldwide
""Early in life I had three ambitions," Joseph A. Schumpeter is said to have remarked. "I wanted to be the greatest economist in the world, the greatest horseman in Austria, and the best lover in Vienna. Well, I never became the greatest horseman in Austria." This colorful and enigmatic man did, however, become one of the truly great economists of this century. But his life was not without setbacks. Having written three important books before the age of thirty, he served as the Austrian Minister of Finance for only seven months before being ousted during the difficult period immediately after World War I, and during the 1920s he also failed in business. He spent the last two decades of his life as a popular and influential teacher at Harvard University. This major intellectual biography of Schumpeter follows his career from his immensely creative and productive youth in Austria-Hungary to the strange depressions that plagued him during his later years--especially during World War II, when he shocked his American colleagues with his violent outbursts against Roosevelt and U.S. policy toward Nazi Germany and Japan. Richard Swedberg skillfully blends narrative with a thoughtful and knowledgeable evaluation of Schumpeter's major contributions to economics, history, sociology, and political science."
Joseph Schumpeter : scholar, teacher, and politician by Eduard März( Book )
3 editions published between 1983 and 1991 in German and English and held by 10 libraries worldwide
"Joseph Schumpeter (1883-1950), the brilliant theorist of capitalist economic development and exact contemporary of J. Maynard Keynes, has long been regarded as one of the leading economists of the twentieth century. After holding many prestigious academic and financial positions in his native Austria, Schumpeter emigrated to the United States and spent the remaining eighteen years of his life as professor at Harvard University. Little, however, has been written about him in English. This book, first published in German in 1983, has been substantially revised by the author for this English edition, and provides much new information about Schumpeter both as a man and as an economist. Book jacket."--Jacket

Prophet of innovation : Joseph Schumpeter and creative destruction by Thomas K McCraw( Book )
1 edition published in 2007 in English and held by 3 libraries worldwide
"Pan Am, Gimbel's, Pullman, Douglas Aircraft, Digital Equipment Corporation, British Leyland - all once as strong as dinosaurs, all now just as extinct. Destruction of businesses, fortunes, products, and careers is the price of progress toward a better material life. No one understood this bedrock economic principle better than Joseph A. Schumpeter. "Creative destruction," he said, is the driving force of capitalism." "Described by John Kenneth Galbraith as "the most sophisticated conservative" of the twentieth century, Schumpeter made his mark as the prophet of incessant change. His vision was stark: Nearly all businesses fail, victims of innovation by their competitors. Businesspeople ignore this lesson at their peril - to survive, they must be entrepreneurial and think strategically. Yet in Schumpeter's view, the general prosperity produced by the "capitalist engine" far outweighs the wreckage it leaves behind." "During a tumultuous life spanning two world wars, the Great Depression, and the early Cold War, Schumpeter reinvented himself many times. From boy wonder in turn-of-the-century Vienna to captivating Harvard professor, he was stalked by tragedy and haunted by the specter of his rival, John Maynard Keynes. By 1983 - the centennial of the birth of both men - Forbes christened Schumpeter, not Keynes, the best navigator through the turbulent seas of globalization. Time has proved that assessment accurate." "Prophet of Innovation is also the private story of a man rescued repeatedly by women who loved him and put his well-being above their own. Without them, he would likely have perished, so fierce were the conflicts between his reason and his emotions. Drawing on all of Schumpeter's writings, including many intimate diaries and letters never before used, this biography paints the full portrait of a magnetic figure who aspired to become the world's greatest economist, lover, and horseman - and admitted to failure only with the horses."--Jacket
