Wie ein fantasievoller Bastler mit einer grauen Welt fertig wird: Serafin knipst in der Pariser Metro Billette, was ihn auf die Dauer deprimiert. Ein ganz spezielles Haus entsteht zusammen mit seinem Freund Plum. Bald ist auch das Innere mit Leben gefüllt, Figuren aus Geschichten werden lebendig und Serafin erfindet eine Maschine, die wie ein ganzes Orchester funktioniert. Alles könnte so schön sein, käme da nicht wieder die grausame Aussenwelt, die ihn enteignen will, um ein neues Quartier aus dem Boden zu stampfen. Serafin und Plum wehren sich erst, dann entsteigen sie den Verfolgern in unerreichbare Höhen himmelwärts. Das 1970 erstmals im Diogenes Verlag erschienene Buch verdient durchaus neue Beachtung.
