Aristotle's theory of poetry and fine art : with a critical text and translation of the Poetics by S. H Butcher( Book )
117 editions published between 1895 and 2013 in 7 languages and held by 2,216 libraries worldwide
This book contains the celebrated Butcher translation of Aristotle's Poetics, faced, page by page, with the complete Greek text (as reconstructed by Mr. Butcher from Greek, Latin and Arabic manuscripts). The editor's 300-page exposition and interpretation follows. In his classic commentary, Butcher discusses with insight, sympathy and great learning Aristotle's ideas and their importance in the history of thought and literature. His scholarly remarks cover art and nature, imitation as an aesthetic term, poetic truth, pleasure as the end of fine art, art and morality, the function of tragedy, the dramatic unities, the ideal tragic hero, plot and character, comedy, and poetic universality. A new 35-page introductory essay, Aristotelian literary criticism, by John Gassner, discusses the validity of Aristotle's ideas today and their application to contemporary literature.--From publisher description

The speeches of Aeschines by Aeschines( Book )
81 editions published between 1903 and 2006 in 6 languages and held by 206 libraries worldwide
As examples of Greek oratory the speeches of Aeschines (390 or 389-314 BCE) rank next to those of Demosthenes, and are important documents for the study of Athenian diplomacy and inner politics. Aeschines' powerful speeches include Against Timarchus, On the False Embassy, and Against Ctesiphon. Aeschines, orator and statesman of Athens, 390 or 389-314 BCE, became active in politics about 350. In 348 he was a member of a mission sent to the Peloponnese to stir up feeling against the growing power of king Philip of Macedon; but in 347, when part of a peace-making embassy to Philip, was won over to sympathy with the king, and became a supporter of the peace policy of the Athenian statesman Eubulus. On a second embassy in 346 to ratify a peace Aeschines' delaying tactics caused the famous orator Demosthenes and Timarchus to accuse him of treason, a charge which he successfully rebutted in the strong extant speech Against Timarchus. In 344-343, when Demosthenes accused him again in a speech, Aeschines replied in the fine extant speech having the same title On the False Embassy and was again acquitted. In 336, when Ctesiphon proposed that Demosthenes should be awarded a crown of gold for state service, Aeschines accused him of proposing something which would violate existing laws. At the trial Aeschines' extant speech Against Ctesiphon was answered by Demosthenes in his masterpiece On the Crown. Aeschines, discredited, left Athens and set up a school of rhetoric at Rhodes. He died in Samos. As examples of Greek oratory the speeches of Aeschines rank next to those of Demosthenes, and are important documents for the study of Athenian diplomacy and inner politics

The Odyssey by Homer( Book )
8 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 5 libraries worldwide
"Poet and translator Edward McCrorie now opens new territory in this rendition, which captures the spare, powerful tone of Homer's epic while engaging contemporary readers with its brisk pace, idiomatic language, and lively characterization. McCrorie closely reproduces the Greek metrical patterns and employs a diction and syntax that reflects the plain, at times stark, quality of Homer's lines rather than later English poetic styles. Avoiding both the stiffness of word-for-word literalism and the exaggeration and distortion of free adaptation, this translation evokes the ancient sound and sense of the poem. McCrorie's is truly an Odyssey for the twenty-first century."
