Philosophical writings by Moses Mendelssohn( Book )

Mendelssohn's Philosophical Writings, published in 1761, bring the metaphysical tradition to bear on the topic of 'sentiments' (defined as knowledge or awareness by way of the senses). Mendelssohn offers a nuanced defence of Leibniz's theodicy and conception of freedom, an examination of the ethics of suicide, an account of the 'mixed sentiments' so central to the tragic genre, a hypothesis about weakness of will, an elaboration of the main principles and types of art, a definition of sublimity and analysis of its basic forms, and, lastly, a brief tract on probability theory, aimed at rebutting Hume's scepticism. This volume also includes the essay 'On Evidence in Metaphysical Sciences', selected in 1763 by the Berlin Royal Academy of Sciences over all other submitted essays, including one by Kant, as the best answer to the question of whether metaphysical sciences are capable of the same sort and degree of evidence as mathematics

Über die Lehre des Spinoza in Briefen an den Herrn Moses Mendelssohn by Friedrich Heinrich Jacobi( Book )
25 editions published between 1785 and 1997 in 3 languages and held by 179 libraries worldwide
Friedrich Heinrich Jacobi (1743-1819) turned from being an early admirer of the great German-Jewish philosopher Moses Mendelssohn (1729-1796) into his bitter adversary. The most basic touchstone of their dispute was that Mendelssohn firmly believed that Reason provides the key to human morality, while Jacobi in an attempt to dethrone Reason, called into question its ability to provide ultimate answers and instead argued on behalf of pure feeling. When Jacobi claimed that Mendelssohn's colleague Gottthold Lessing (1729-1781) confided to him (Jacobi) in his final days that he was a Spinozist, which is to say a pantheist, Mendelssohn took this as a personal attack. The present volume contains Jacobi's correspondence with Mendelssohn on this matter. See A. Altmann, Moses Mendelssohn: A Biographical Study (1973), p.638. Last works by Moses Mendelssohn( Book )

Phädon : or, On the immortality of the soul by Moses Mendelssohn( Book )
8 editions published between 2006 and 2007 in English and held by 134 libraries worldwide
"This is the first modern translation of Moses Mendelssohn's classic work of 1767, the Phadon. It includes Mendelssohn's own introduction and appendix, as well as footnotes and explanatory introduction by David Shavin. (Charles Cullen's translation of 1789 is the only other extant translation.) The "modern Socrates" of the German classical period, Mendelssohn has created a beautiful translation and elaboration of Plato's Phado led to a revolution in thought, and a subsequent renaissance in Germany. The debt of the German classical period to ancient Greece is embodied in Mendelssohn's Phadon, as is the promise of the American Revolution. The translation and accompanying notes recapture Mendelssohn's unique marriage of depth of thought and breadth of appeal."--Jacket
Morning hours : lectures on God's existence by Moses Mendelssohn( Book )
16 editions published in 2011 in 3 languages and held by 67 libraries worldwide
The last work published by Moses Mendelssohn during his lifetime, Morning Hours (1785) is also the most sustained presentation of his mature epistemological and metaphysical views, all elaborated in the service of presenting proofs for the existence of God. But Morning Hours is much more than a theoretical treatise. It also plays a central role in the drama of the Pantheismusstreit, Mendelssohn's "dispute" with F.H. Jacobi over the nature and scope of Lessing's attitude toward Spinoza and "pantheism". As the latest salvo in a war of texts with Jacobi, Morning Hours is also Mendelssohn's attempt to set the record straight regarding his beloved Lessing in this connection, not least by demonstrating the absence of any practical (i.e., religious or moral) difference between theism and a "purified pantheism."
