In the studies that follow, Kornai analyzes the on-going dilemmas. The transition from communism to free enterprise is filled with daunting hurdles; it requires no less than redefining ownership, changing values concerning the distribution of wealth, transferring the control of political power, creating financial institutions and enforcing financial discipline, and making deep economic sacrifice. Kornai closes with an overall survey of postsocialist transition, describing the stages that countries tend to go through, that will be particularly useful to scholars of comparative economic systems
Reforming the state : fiscal and welfare reform in post-socialist countries ( Book )
20 editions published between 2000 and 2001 in English and Undetermined and held by 400 libraries worldwide
Countries of the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe are entering the second decade of political transformation and economic reform. The first decade involved macroeconomic stabilization, privatization, and development of the basic institutional infrastructure of a market economy. The new policy challenges center on the nature of the social contract between citizens and their governments. These challenges include identifying the appropriate boundaries between the obligations of the public sector and the responsibilities of individual citizens, the range of public goods the government should supply, and who should pay for and benefit from their provision. The essays in this volume, first published in 2001, focus on two interrelated issues: the making of fiscal policy and the provision of citizens' welfare, particularly regarding pensions and health care. The essays emphasize that there is no single model of a market economy; rather, governments and publics face a range of options for restructuring the socialist welfare state

Building a trustworthy state in post-socialist transition by János Kornai( Book )
17 editions published between 2004 and 2006 in English and held by 243 libraries worldwide
"This book considers the problems and prospects for creating trustworthy and reliable public institutions since the transition from socialism in Central and Eastern Europe. The focus is on "second generation" issues of democratic consolidation in states where the basic structures of the market and the state have been established. The contributors raise important issues, such as corruption and participation, largely neglected during the first stage of the transition, and that are of growing importance as several countries in the region move toward entry into the European Union. Highlighting problems and prospects of democratization with comparative import to other newly democratizing areas, this volume draws on the experience of those who have lived through and studied the transition and contrasts their insights with those of generalist scholars who study government accountability and democracy."--Jacket
Planning, shortage, and transformation : essays in honor of János Kornai by János Kornai( Book )
8 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 241 libraries worldwide
The three major themes of Janos Kornai's work reflected in the title of this book--planning, shortage, and transition, or transformation--figure prominently in the essays. After a philosophical introduction by Edmond Malinvaud, the book is divided into three sections: Markets and Organizations, Theory of Transition, and The Transitional Experience. Janos Kornai is one of the world's leading experts on the economics of socialism and transition. An early advocate of reform in Hungary, he has written penetrating analyses of centrally planned economies and their transformation to market-oriented systems. This volume is being published in celebration of Kornai's seventieth birthday. Creating social trust in post-socialist transition by János Kornai( Book )
14 editions published between 2004 and 2015 in English and held by 217 libraries worldwide
Beneficial social and economic exchange relies on a certain level of trust. But trust is a delicate matter, not least in the former socialist countries where illegitimate behaviour by governments made distrust a habit. The chapters in this volume analyze the causes and the effects of the lack of social trust in post socialist countries. The contributions originated in the Collegium Budapest project on Honesty and Trust: Theory and Experience in the Light of the Post Socialist Transition. A second volume entitled, Building a Trustworthy State in Post Socialist Transition, is being published simultaneously. From socialism to capitalism : eight essays by János Kornai( Book )
18 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 163 libraries worldwide
"The author has collected here the studies in which he sought to contribute to the theory of the great systems, the political governmental forms, and the change of system. Though he tries to answer the questions he puts to himself, the questions may actually be seen as more important than the responses. What is socialism? What is capitalism? What is democracy? Studying a country at a given moment, how is it possible to decide whether the institutions at work in it resemble those of other countries? How do rhetoric or ideology relate to reality? Which operating characteristics of a country are system-specific and which found under any system?"--Jacket
Corruption, development and institutional design by International Economic Association( Book )
20 editions published between 2008 and 2009 in English and held by 154 libraries worldwide
"With the end of the Cold War at the end of the twentieth century, the post-socialist transition in Central and Eastern Europe, China and Vietnam, the impressive growth of India, and the rapid spread of globalization, today's world is vastly different from that of two or three decades ago. Many of these changes are closely related to the concerns of economics and, in particular, institutional economics, which has been brought to the forefront due to the analysis of institutions in transition economies, and the realisation of how large a part they play in a successful market economy. With the aim of providing a comprehensive analysis of institutions, and of the global economy more generally, this volume explores systems of institutions, the interactions between institutions, and the effect that corruption can have on them. There is also an examination of the impact of immigration, a look at developments in behavioural economics, and an exploration of the links between democratic progress and economic growth. This volume brings together a wide range of scholars from around the world and provides a comprehensive overview of recent trends in economics, as well as explaining how economics plays a crucial part in understanding and analysing important changes taking place internationally."--Book cover
Kraft des Gedankens : ungewöhnliche Erinnerungen an eine intellektuelle Reise by János Kornai( Book )
4 editions published in 2011 in German and held by 15 libraries worldwide
