British aviation posters : art, design and flight by Scott Anthony( Book )
1 edition published in 2012 in English and held by 125 libraries worldwide
"From Futurism and Modernism to Art Deco and Surrealism, aviation was from its earliest days inextricably linked with revolutionary new ways of seeing the world. Focusing on the golden age of British civil aviation, British Aviation Posters shows how art and design were applied with great creativity and style to develop and promote aviation in the UK and beyond. The story begins with the air shows and exhibitions of the early pioneers, through the start of regular passenger flights in the 1920s and the creation of Imperial Airways as the UK national carrier in 1924. By the 1930s passenger routes across the world were being developed and promoted with increasingly sophisticated visual publicity to persuade the British public to be more 'air minded' in a turbulent period of political and social upheaval. The New Elizabethan Age took UK aviation in new directions in the 1950s with BOAC and BEA ushering in the development of jet airliners and a growing consumer market that needed to be serviced by new forms of marketing and promotion. Drawing on British Airways' premier poster collection and featuring the work of such distinguished designers as Theyre Lee-Elliott, Ben Nicholson, Edward McKnight Kauffer, F.H.K. Henrion, Gabby Schreiber, Robin Day, Mary de Saulles, Abram Games, Hugh Casson and Frank Wootton, British Aviation Posters offers a definitive account of this seminal period in modern UK design history and shows how posters, publicity and graphic design were used to express the speed, progress and sheer excitement of flight"--Book jacket

Concorde - the supersonic achievement celebrating 40th anniversary of the first flight of British prototype ( Book )
1 edition published in 2009 in English and held by 4 libraries worldwide
"The visionary concept of an aircraft that could carry one hundred passengers at twice the speed of sound across the Atlantic emerged about halfway through the first century of powered flight. How this dream became an aeronautical reality and a success in airline service is covered in this conference to coincide with the 40th anniversary of that first take-off. Based on their personal experience, invited speakers will look at a range of subjects including, amongst others, the role of the Supersonic Transport Aircraft Committee, design concepts, airworthiness and flight test as well as the politics and economics of airline operations and describe in-service engineering and cabin service as well as what it was like to fly this iconic aircraft in commercial service. The day will end with an evening lecture by David MacDonald, former Flight Engineer Superintendent and Capt Dave Leney, former Concorde Pilot and Flight Manager who were closely involved with Concorde's entry into service. The lecture will cover some of the in-service technical milestones. As we entered the second century of powered flight, Concorde had been and gone from our skies. There is still no other aircraft in the world that can do what Concorde did. If you were part of the Concorde adventure, flew as a passenger on the aircraft or just delighted in seeing her fly, this conference will be of interest to you."--Welcome screen
