The Living book of the Living Theatre by Richard Schechner( Book )
3 editions published in 1971 in English and held by 338 libraries worldwide
Founded in 1947, the Living Theatre is the oldest experimental theatre group still existing in the U.S. This book represents itself as a presentation of the group as much as a presentation of theatrical spectacle, noting that it is the essential philosophy of a group which overturned classic and experimental dramatic forms to replace them with political protest and moral anarchy. Within the book, the Living Theatre's point-of-view is expressed in words and photographs which alternate between daily life and the stage. Poetic and political statements alternate with the bulk of the book consisting of black and white images, varied in content but universal in their denunciation of the alienating structure of capitalist society

J. Beck (1925-1985), poète, peintre, homme de théâtre, fonde avec Judith Malina le "Living Theatre". Notes-fragments sur le théâtre et sa fonction dans le monde et la société
The connection by Shirley Clarke( visu )
15 editions published between 1961 and 2014 in English and held by 173 libraries worldwide
Film version of the play The Connection, by Jack Gelber. A filmmaker and his camera crew has brought together a group of addicts in the pad of a dope peddler to improvise on a dialogue set out for the filming of a documentary. The pusher and the junkies drift strangely about the room waiting for their connection, each in a solo characterization on a common theme, similar to the four jazz musicians onstage among them. Based on the Living Theatre production, as directed by Judith Malina and designed by Julian Beck, the film was shot in a drug addict's apartment in New York City

Paradise now ( visu )
8 editions published between 1970 and 2010 in English and French and held by 163 libraries worldwide
This videotape was shot during the last presentations of Paradise Now in Brussels and before 7,000 spectators in the Berlin Sportspalast. Expressionistic coloring has been injected by electronic means. During the four hours of performance, a baccanal of forms and confrontations goes on in every part of the theater. Paradise Now is mind blowing and innovative blurring of the line between political action, psychotherapy, tribal ritual and experimental theatre

Mekas filmed this play about a Marine Corps prison on the stage of the Living Theatre after it had been closed down by the police for tax evasion. He and the cast slipped into the theater through a coal chute and made the film in five hours. The furious rhythms of the play convey the inhumanity of military discipline with the raw force of a battle document

"In 1968 the Living Theatre returned to America with a repertory of four new productions developed during their years of self-imposed exile in Europe. Their triumphant tour was in tune with the revolutionary aspirations of the late sixties, documented in this extraordinary film.
