A Paris, au début de la seconde Guerre mondiale, Gévigne demande à Flavières, son ami avocat, de surveiller son épouse, Madeleine, qui selon lui a un comportement suicidaire. Lʹavocat sʹéprend de cette dernière et lui fixe de nombreux rendez-vous. Lors dʹune rencontre dans une église, non loin de Poissy, la jeune femme gravit les marches qui mènent au clocher. Après un effort considérable, Flavières arrive au sommet et aperçoit en contrebas le corps présumé de Madeleine étendu, sans vie. Peu de temps après, il apprend que Gévigne a été fusillé. Plus tard, il entrevoit une dame ressemblant étrangement à Madeleine. Celle-ci, prétendant sʹappeler Renée Sourange, entretient une relation amoureuse avec Flavières qui va reconnaître dans le sac de son amante un collier quʹil a déjà vu chez Gévigne. Qui est donc réellement cette femme qui fait battre une fois de plus son cœur?
