Crisis and decline : the fate of the Southern Unionists by R. B McDowell( Book )
6 editions published between 1997 and 2015 in English and held by 117 libraries worldwide
?Receding imperialism usually leaves behind those who have for generations staunchly upheld its authority and flourished under its aegis-Germans in Bohemia, Swedes in Finland, Greeks in Asia Minor, Muslims in the Balkans. Among those abandoned adherents of a lost cause were the unionists in the south and west of Ireland'. So begins R.B. McDowell's preface to this lively, meticulously researched account of the fate of Irish unionists outside Ulster from the era of Parnell through the early years of the Irish Free State. McDowell details the efforts of a ruling minority to maintain the
Grattan : a life by R. B McDowell( Book )
4 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 86 libraries worldwide
"'Grattan's Parliament' has a permanent place in Irish historical lore, but who was Henry Grattan? R. B. McDowell's biography traces the varied career of this elusive figure whose political fortunes were as tempestuous as his own character." "McDowell begins with Grattan's family background and his early years in the Irish House of Commons, during which, at the age of thirty-six, he achieved his greatest triumph: the granting of 'legislative independence' to that body. Many of the years of 'Grattan's Parliament' were years of opposition for Henry Grattan, whose talent was for oratory - sometimes scurrilous, sometimes sublime - rather than for administration. McDowell documents Grattan's epic political struggle with Henry Flood for control over the soul of the Irish 'patriot' faction, and gives a rich description of the atmosphere of the Dublin parliament during these heady years." "After the passage of the Act of Union, Grattan made a dramatic political comeback as a Westminster MP. There he became the outstanding parliamentary advocate of Catholic emancipation, but he often clashed with Daniel O'Connell and other Catholic leaders because of his continuing support for a Crown veto over appointments to Catholic bishoprics - a measure he believed necessary to make emanciption politically palatable. He remained a vigorous parliamentarian until well into his seventies."--BOOK JACKET

The writings and speeches of Edmund Burke by Edmund Burke( Book )
22 editions published between 1990 and 1991 in English and held by 67 libraries worldwide
This volume of The Writings and Speeches of Edmund Burke continues the story of Edmund Burke, the Rockingham party in British politics, and the American crisis. By 1774 Burke was already recognized as a master of parliamentary debate and an accomplished writer. By 1780, however, his reputation was to have risen substantially. Probably the most important single reason was his Speech on Conciliation with America, which was presented to the House of Commons in March 1775, published, and circulated to a wide audience on both sides of the Atlantic. In that speech, Burke used the full force of his intellect and eloquence to set out the Rockinghams' first comprehensive plan for achieving lasting peace in the Empire. The public commendation he received helped him to gain recognition for offerings such as his second conciliation proposal in November 1775, and his Letter to the Sheriffs of Bristol in 1777. It also gave him some of the confidence he needed to announce the Whig party's historic conversion to a moderate reform programme in his celebrated speeches on economical reform in 1779 and 1780.; Numerous writings and speeches in this volume are transcriptions of previously unpublished manuscripts from the collections at Sheffield and Northampton. These allow the reader new insights into the workings of Burke's mind not just in relation to the major political issues, but also to a multitude of engaging subjects such as education, capital punishment, religious dissent, and the return of the Rockingham Whigs to government power
