It is difficult to reconcile them, and all that is certain is that Becke spent many years on vessels trading in the Pacific islands. Becke went to London, and he remained in Europe for about 15 years, during which time a large number of collections

Becke's first two collections of short stories, originally published in 1894 and 1895 respectively, include descriptions of the Pacific and its islands that are widely regarded as some of the most accurate and evocative ever written. Becke drew on his own exciting experience as a supercargo, trader, shipwrecked mariner and lover of native women, besides the many yarns of other events and eras in the Pacific that evoked beguiling, leisurely days. In doing so, he introduced Australians (and, in due course, readers around the world) to a region of which they thought they knew a little, but of which he had much more to tell them
