"In this New Interpretation of the historical development of economic thought, Mark Perlman and Charles R. McCann, Jr. illuminate the foundations of economic inquiry during the past three hundred years. Writing from the standpoint of the impact of cultural pluralism on economic thinking, their purpose is to show how modern economic thinking is shaped by a small number of cultural legacies that explain not only how economic questions are asked but also how they are formulated. The Pillars of Economic Understanding is thus distinguished by the attention that it gives to the philosophical ideas that are the cultural legacies upon which the structure of economics is built."--Jacket

Industry, services, and agriculture : the United States faces a united Europe ( Book )
7 editions published between 1991 and 1992 in English and held by 342 libraries worldwide
In 1985, the European Community began creating a far-reaching design for regional integration. This single market plan called for European market barriers to fall, a unified market of over 320 million consumers to emerge, goods and capital to flow across national borders, business to benefits from new market opportunities, and other dramatic economic gains to be achieved. But will all go according to plan? Troubling issues remain to be defined in practice. The European and American authors of the chapters in this volume temper enthusiasm with skepticism as they take a closer look at these issues in the context of a number of key economic areas

Ten great economists : from Marx to Keynes by Joseph A Schumpeter( Book )
17 editions published between 1965 and 1997 in English and held by 92 libraries worldwide
"Originally published in 1952, this seminal work is reproduced here with a new introduction by Professor Mark Perlman, a well-known Schumpeterian scholar. The essays, written between 1910-50 were primarily commemorative pieces marking the achievement of a celebrated economist. Those covered include: Marx, Walras, Menger, Marshall, Pareto, Bohm-Bawerk, Taussig, Fisher, Mitchell, and Keynes. The appendix includes articles on lesser-known economists, Knapp, Von Wieser and Von Bortkiewicz. With the exception of Marx, Schumpeter himself selected the ten main essays for inclusion in this volume and was personally acquainted with all but two of his subjects. Initially considering them unworthy for publication he relented in the face of public demand since the journals in which they originally appeared were difficult to obtain. The new introduction places this work in its contemporary context and highlights its importance for students unfamiliar with the original."--Back cover
