The mentally disturbed teacher by Joseph T Shipley( Book )
7 editions published in 1961 in English and held by 330 libraries worldwide
"It is with full sympathy and concern that the author opens speculation upon a little-discussed problem in the field of education: the problem of the mentally disturbed teacher. The gravity of this problem is deepened by the fact that it is not only the teacher who suffers, but also, in ways beyond calculation, the children in her charge. The author's survey has been carried on in 44 school systems in all parts of the United States. He has checked private schools and parochial as well as public school systems. Every case presented or referred to in this book is an actual, recorded instance, although naturally names have been altered and localities generalized. The problem is a national one; the varieties of mental disturbance seem widely distributed and any methods of treatment apply to all sections of the land. The mental ailments that afflict teachers are, in substance, the same as press upon the remainder of the population. Differences in their manifestation rise from differences in the nature of their work. There are, nevertheless, many ways in which the personality of an afflicted teacher affects the classroom activity, and it seems wise to organize the present consideration along these lines. Manifestly, it would be absurd to suggest that all disciplinary problems are caused by a disturbed teacher. There are some children who will be problems in any class. And there are some days when the best teacher is a bit below top form, and the children misbehave. Every other symptom, as well as failure to maintain discipline, is equally unsatisfactory by itself, in establishing need of psychiatric care. Each must be viewed as part of a pattern. The continuance of unsatisfactory conditions calls for investigation and remedy. The possible teacher failings are presented here, however, not in the technical phraseology of the psychiatrist, nor organized according to the specific disease, but rather as they might impinge upon the children, or become manifest to a supervisor, in the classroom. No one deviation from the standards of effective teaching is in itself a sign of illness. In every defective condition various patterns of feeling and behavior intermingle. Nevertheless, an attempt will be made to consider separately the major aspects of classroom behavior that may approach pathological proportions, in the hope that it will be clear why they are often tardily reported and why it is crucially important, for the welfare of both teachers and children, that they be recognized promptly and taken in hand. Psychiatrists and other special students of the mind might appreciate an organization different from that which occurs to an educator. They might, for example, prefer a division of this book's consideration into four major groups, according as the troubled teachers are disturbed in their: A. Action B. Emotionality C. Ideation D.A mixture of these. The chapters would then be grouped roughly as follows: A. Chapters 1, 2, 4, 5, 14, 19, 20; B. Chapters 3, 6, 11, 12, 13, 21; C. Chapters 7, 8, 9; D. Chapters 10, 15, 16, 17, 18. The arrangement followed in the book moves from troubles, or at least symptoms, easier to observe to those more difficult or more complex, in the hope that the reader will discern the logic in the presentation and, in any event, importance in the facts and findings"--Introduction.
