Principles of optics : electromagnetic theory of propagation, interference and diffraction of light by Max Born( Book )
173 editions published between 1950 and 2013 in 5 languages and held by 4,280 libraries worldwide
This classic text presents optics deductively as a system based on Maxwell's equations. It deals with those optical phenomena that can be described with the help of a continuous distribution of matter, and provides an overview of optics as a whole
Einstein's theory of relativity by Max Born( Book )
92 editions published between 1921 and 2013 in 4 languages and held by 2,560 libraries worldwide
A Nobel Prize-winning physicist explains the historical background and scientific principles of Einstein's famous theory
Atomic physics by Max Born( Book )
151 editions published between 1935 and 1989 in 5 languages and held by 2,185 libraries worldwide
The Nobel Laureate's brilliant exposition of the kinetic theory of gases, elementary particles, the nuclear atom, wave-corpuscles, atomic structure and spectral lines, electron spin and Pauli's principle, quantum statistics, molecular structure and nuclear physics. Over 40 appendices, a bibliography, numerous figures and graphs
The restless universe by Max Born( Book )
34 editions published between 1935 and 2013 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,414 libraries worldwide
This highly readable introduction to modern physics was written by Nobel laureate Max Born. The book begins with an explanation of the kinetic theory of gases, providing a step-by-step development of general concepts of Newtonian mechanics and thermodynamics. Subsequent chapters discuss the structure of the atom and aspects of nuclear physics
The Born-Einstein letters; correspondence between Albert Einstein and Max and Hedwig Born from 1916 to 1955 by Albert Einstein( Book )
43 editions published between 1969 and 2005 in 4 languages and held by 1,322 libraries worldwide
Physics in my generation by Max Born( Book )
51 editions published between 1956 and 1989 in 4 languages and held by 1,105 libraries worldwide
THE idea of collecting these essays occurred to me when, in the leisure of retire ment, I scanned some of my own books and found that two of the more widely read show a startling change of attitude to some of the fundamental concepts of science. These are Einstein's Theory of Relativity of 1921 and the American edition of The Restless Universe of 1951. I have taken the introduction of as the former the first item of this collection, the postscript to the latter as its last. These books agree in the relativistic concept of space and time, but differ in many other funda mental notions. In 1921 I believed-and I shared this belief with most of my contemporary physicists-that science produced an objective knowledge of the world, which is governed by deterministic laws. The scientific method seemed to me superior to other, more subjective ways of forming a picture of the world philosophy, poetry, and religion; and I even thought the unambiguous language of science to be a step towards a better understanding between human beings. In 1951 I believed in none of these things. The border between object and subject had been blurred, deterministic laws had been replaced by statistical ones, and although physicists understood one another well enough across all national frontiers they had contributed nothing to a better understanding of nations, but had helped in inventing and applying the most horrible weapons of destruction
