Autobiography of Edward Hyde (1609-1674), Earl of Clarendon, together with his history of the ousting of Cromwell, the restoration of royalty to the throne of England, and the early years of government under Charles II (1630-1685). Edward supported the royalist cause throughout the Cromwell years, and was Lord High Chancellor and chief minister from 1660 to 1667, at which time he was dismissed and fled to France, where he began to write this history and autobiography. His daughter, Anne Hyde (1637-1671), married the future James II in 1660, and was the mother of Queen Mary II and Queen Anne
