39 editions published between 2004 and 2014 in 9 languages and held by 780 libraries worldwide
"Marking a major development in Foucault's thinking, this book derives from the lecture course which he gave at the College de France between January and April, 1978. Taking as his starting point the notion of "bio-power," introduced both in his 1976 course Society Must be Defended and in the first volume of his History of Sexuality, Foucault sets out to study the emergence of this new technology of power over population."--Jacket
The hermeneutics of the subject : lectures at the Collège de France, 1981-1982 by Michel Foucault( Book )
25 editions published between 2001 and 2012 in 4 languages and held by 770 libraries worldwide
"The Hermeneutics of the Subject is the third volume in the collection of Michel Foucault's lectures at the College de France, one of the world's most prestigious institutions. Faculty at the College give public lectures, in which they present works-in-progress on any subject of their choosing. Foucault's wide-ranging lectures influenced his groundbreaking works like The History of Sexuality and Discipline and Punish. In the lectures comprising this volume, Foucault focuses on how the "self" and the "care of the self" were conceived during the period of antiquity, beginning with Socrates. The problems of the ethical formation of the self, Foucault argues, form the background for our own questions about subjectivity and remain at the center of contemporary moral thought. This series of lectures throws new light on Foucault's final works and shows the full depth of his engagement with ancient thought. Lucid and provocative, The Hermeneutics of the Subject reveals Foucault at the height of his powers."--Jacket

Psychiatric power : lectures at the Collège de France, 1973-74 by Michel Foucault( Book )
14 editions published between 2003 and 2008 in 3 languages and held by 215 libraries worldwide
"In this new addition to the Collège de France lecture series, Michel Foucault's historical enquiry into the uses and techniques of power and knowledge finds itself directed towards a study of the birth of psychiatry. Psychiatric Power shows not only how Western society's division of the "mad" from the "sane" began, but also how society, medicine, and law and their treatment of the "mad" developed into what we now recognize as modern psychiatry, and how modern social and political attitudes towards madness developed. A seminal work by this leading thinker of the modern age, Psychiatric Power builds on Foucault's published writings while opening new vistas within historical and philosophical study"--Provided by publisher

16 editions published between 2009 and 2011 in 3 languages and held by 187 libraries worldwide
"--Page 4 of cover
The essential works of Michel Foucault, 1954-1984 by Michel Foucault( Book )
35 editions published between 1994 and 2003 in 3 languages and held by 174 libraries worldwide
"This volume draws together Foucault's contributions to what he saw as the still-underdeveloped practice of political analysis. It covers the domains Foucault helped to make part of the core agenda of Western political culture - medicine, psychiatry, the penal system, sexuality - illuminating and expanding on the themes of The Birth of the Clinic, Discipline and Punish, and the first volume of The History of Sexuality. Power also includes important later writings, highlighting Foucault's revolutionary analysis of the politics of personal conduct and freedom."--Jacket
Lectures on the will to know : lectures at the Collège de France, 1970-1971 and Oedipal knowledge by Michel Foucault( Book )
15 editions published between 2011 and 2013 in 3 languages and held by 135 libraries worldwide
Lectures on the Will to Know reminds us that Michel Foucault's work only ever had one object: truth. Here, he builds on his earlier work, Discipline and Punish, to explore the relationship between tragedy, conflict, and truth-telling. He also explores the different forms of truth-telling, and their relation to power and the law. The publication of Lectures on the Will to Know marks a milestone in Foucault's reception, and it will no longer be possible to read him in the same way as before
On the government of the living : lectures at the Collège de France, 1979-1980 by Michel Foucault( Book )
1 edition published in 2014 in English and held by 125 libraries worldwide
In these lectures delivered in 1980, Michel Foucault gives an important new inflection to his history of 'regimes of truth.' Following on from the themes of knowledge-power and governmentality, he turns his attention here to the ethical domain of practices of techniques of the self. Why and how, he asks, does the exercise of power as government demand not only acts of obedience and submission, but 'truth acts' in which individuals subject to relations of power are also required to be subjects in procedures of truth-telling? How and why are subjects required not just to tell the truth, but to tell the truth about themselves? These questions lead to a re-reading of Sophocles' Oedipus the King and, through an examination of the texts of Tertullian, Cassian and others, to an analysis of the 'truth acts' in early Christian practices of baptism, penance, and spiritual direction in which believers are called upon to manifest the truth of themselves as subjects always danger of falling into sin. In the public expression of the subject's condition as a sinner, in the rituals of repentance and penance, and in the detailed verbalization of thoughts in the examination of conscience, we see the organization of a pastoral system focused upon confession

8 editions published in 2012 in French and held by 114 libraries worldwide
