Inventing and playing games in the English classroom : a handbook for teachers by Kenneth, Ed Davis( Book )
4 editions published in 1977 in English and held by 375 libraries worldwide
This handbook introduces English teachers to the use of simulation games as a serious method for teaching composition, language, and literature. In the first section, separate chapters discuss the rationale for game-playing; the teacher's role in simulations and ways in which classroom interaction changes when games are used; a step-by-step process for designing a game; ways in which the limitations imposed by game rules free players to engage in new, positive kinds of behavior; concerns about the abuse and overuse of games; and possibilities for designing new games. The second section of the book offers descriptions of eight teacher-made games, along with specific instructions for playing them. Appendixes provide an annotated bibliography of publications on games and simulations, descriptions of recommended commercial games for the English classroom, and a list of academic games development centers. America's hidden history : untold tales of the first Pilgrims, fighting women, and forgotten founders who shaped a nation by Kenneth C Davis( Book )
1 edition published in 2008 in English and held by 4 libraries worldwide
An iconoclastic look at America's past: overlooked episodes that shaped the nation's destiny and character. Spanning a period from the Spanish arrival in America to George Washington's inauguration in 1789, these narratives bring to light little-known but fascinating, myth-busting facts. Read the story of the first real Pilgrims in America, who were wine-making French Huguenots, not dour English Separatists; the coming-of-age story of Queen Isabella, who suggested that Columbus take pigs on his voyage, which may have spread disease to many Native Americans; the long, bloody relationship between the Pilgrims and Indians, running counter to the idyllic scene of the Thanksgiving feast; the little-known story of George Washington as a headstrong young soldier who committed a war crime, signed a confession, and started a war. Full of color, intrigue, and human interest, this book connects some of the dots between history and today's headlines--From publisher description

Follow the water ( visu )
1 edition published in 2013 in English and held by 2 libraries worldwide
Already parts of the world suffer from lack of water, and with increasing demand it's expected to get worse. To better understand and predict drought, 30 universities are collaborating in a multidisciplinary effort called the Shale Hills Project. Among the studies, is field research following the life cycle of water along the Susquehanna River Basin, the main tributary to the Chesapeake Bay. With support from the National Science Foundation, civil engineer Chris Duffy and his team at Penn State are tracking rainfall, where it flows, how much is absorbed by plants and soil, how water turns rock into soil, where soil builds up and where it erodes, and how the water flows into rivers, streams and underground aquifers
