The division of labor in society by Émile Durkheim( Book )
374 editions published between 1012 and 2017 in 8 languages and held by 4,737 libraries worldwide
In this momentous challenge to the economic theories of Adam Smith and Karl Marx, Emile Durkheim presents a visionary reconception of the social structures for production and allocation that are the cornerstones of capitalism. He asks how individuality can be retained within the capitalist system. He argues that class conflict is not inherent in a capitalistic society as Marx contended, but that the unfettered growth of state power would lead to the extinction of individuality. He suggests that only in a free society that promotes voluntary bonds between its members can individuality prosper

Sociology and philosophy by Émile Durkheim( Book )
203 editions published between 1864 and 2015 in 9 languages and held by 2,264 libraries worldwide
First published in English in 1953, this volume represents a collection of three essays written by seminal sociologist and philsopher Emile Durkheim in which he puts forward the thesis that society is both a dynamic system and the seat of moral life. Each essay stands alone, but their connecting thread is the dialectic demonstration that a phenomenon, be a sociological or psychological one, is relatively independent of its matrix. The essays provide a valuable insight into Durkeheimian thought

Primitive classification by Émile Durkheim( Book )
73 editions published between 1063 and 2011 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,529 libraries worldwide
"Durkheim and Mauss claim that the individual mind is incapable of classification, and they seek the origin of 'classificatory function' in society. On the basis of an intensive examination of forms and principles of symbolic classification reported from the Australian aborigines, the Zuñi and traditional China, they try to establish a formal correspondence between social and symbolic classification. From this they argue that the mode of classification is determined by the form of society, and that the notions of space, time, hierarchy, number, class and other such cognitive categories are products of society."--Back cover

Selected writings by Émile Durkheim( Book )
34 editions published between 1972 and 2010 in English and held by 1,119 libraries worldwide
This is the only collection of Durkheim's writings to draw upon the whole body of his work. Many of the texts in the book are here translated for the first time. Dr. Giddens takes his selections from a wide variety of sources and includes a number of items from untranslated writings in the Revue Philosophique, Année Sociologique and from L'évolution pedagogue en France. Selections from previously translated writings have been checked against the originals and amended or re-translated where necessary. Dr. Giddens arranges his selections thematically rather than chronologically. However, extracts from all phases of Durkheim's intellectual career are represented, giving the date of their first publication, which makes the evolution of his thought easily traceable. In his introduction Dr. Giddens discusses phases in the interpretation of Durkheim's thought, as well as the main themes in his work, with an analysis of the effects of his thinking on modern sociology. The book is for students at any level taking courses in sociology, social anthropology and social theory, for whom Durkheim is one of the major writers studied
The elementary forms of religious life by Émile Durkheim( Book )
30 editions published between 1915 and 2008 in English and held by 1,109 libraries worldwide
"Emile Durkheim (1858-1917), founder of the French school of sociology, produced an astonishing array of books and articles. He wrote both empirical studies and abstract treatises, most famously in his books on suicide and on the division of labor. But his last and greatest book, on a topic of utmost importance, is far less well known in the English-speaking world. Les formes élémentaires de la vie religieuse, published in 1912, received a hasty translation in 1915 that has remained, until now, the only English version available. In this now-classic work, Durkheim analyzes religion into its most fundamental beliefs and rites, including: sacredness, the soul, spirits, and gods; asceticism, sacrifice, communion, and mourning. Through an examination of the world these elements constitute, he is able to argue that religion originates in social life and in the most fundamental capacities of human intellect. His analysis is a model of rich comparison, analytic clarity, and open-minded inquiry. The 1915 translation, by Joseph Ward Swain, was first published in the United States by The Free Press in 1954. At long last, sociologist and religious scholar Karen Fields offers a much-needed new translation, with an illuminating introduction, that will restore Durkheim's work to its original brilliance and gain the respect accorded the very best translations of other key works by this author. At the end of our century, as so many people ask fundamental questions about the sacred, and as social science itself faces a methodological crisis of confidence, there can be no better source of answers, as well as models of analysis, than Durkheim's text."--Jacket

"This volume brings together the most comprehensive selection yet available of Emile Durkheim's writings on religion. Besides helping to establish the discipline of sociology in France, Durkheim is widely recognized as one of the founding figures in the modern study of religion. The volume contains a new translation of important sections of The Elementary Forms of Religious Life (1912), of some of Durkheim's early reviews, articles, and extracts from books, presented in order of original publication. Also included are comprehensive bibliographies, and early reviews of Durkheim's work on religion by such writers as van Gennep, Goldenwieser, Stanner, and, for the first time in English, by the French sociologist Gaston Richard."--Jacket
Emile Durkheim; [selections from his work by Émile Durkheim( Book )

On suicide by Émile Durkheim( Book )
46 editions published between 1897 and 2013 in 6 languages and held by 506 libraries worldwide
Emile Durkheim, one of the fathers of modern sociology, was the first to suggest that suicide might be as much a response to society as an act of individual despair. When he looked at social, religious, or racial groups that had high incidences of suicide, he discovered that abnormally high or low levels of social integration increase the likelihood of suicide. More than a century after its initial publication, Durkheim's groundbreaking work continues to fascinate and challenge those seeking to understand one of the least understandable of human acts. Emile Durkheim by Kenneth Thompson( Book )
4 editions published between 1982 and 2002 in English and held by 25 libraries worldwide
"The French sociologist, Emile Durkheim, is a key figure in the development of sociology, and was largely responsible for the transformation of the earlier diffuse philosophy of Comte and others into a systematic discipline. This book examines his considerable achievements and situates them in their social and intellectual contexts, with a concise account of the major elements of Durkheim's sociology. The author discusses the reason for Durkheim's profound influence on subsequent developments in the subject, covers the historical and political background of this work, and demonstrates his achievement in setting sociology upon a sound academic base." "The book includes a critical commentary on the four main studies that exemplify Durkheim's contribution to sociology: The Division of Labour in Society; Suicide; The Rules of Sociological Method and The Elementary Forms of Religious Life."--BOOK JACKET
Emile Durkheim on the family by Mary Ann Lamanna( Book )
1 edition published in 2002 in English and held by 13 libraries worldwide
"Classical sociologist Emile Durkheim's focus on one of his primary interests - the family - has appeared only in scattered sources, with many not even translated into English. For these reasons, his writings are little known and have not been presented and analyzed holistically. Mary Ann Lamanna brings together Durkheim's ideas on the family from these diverse sources and presents his family sociology systematically and comprehensively. Durkheim's work in this area is situated in its historical context, and comparisons are drawn to present-day sociology of the family and family issues. Emile Durkheim on the Family is fascinating reading for anyone with an interest in sociology of the family, social theory, family science, European intellectual history, women's studies, and legal history, as well as anyone generally interested in family studies or nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century European intellectual history."--Jacket
