George-Etienne Cartier Montreal bourgeois by Brian J Young( Computer File )
15 editions published between 1981 and 2004 in English and French and held by 1,057 libraries worldwide
The politics of codification the Lower Canadian Civil Code of 1866 by Brian J Young( file )
7 editions published between 1994 and 2008 in English and held by 991 libraries worldwide
Brian Young interprets codification as part of a larger process that included the collapse of the Lower Canadian rebellions, the decline of seigneurialism, expansion of bourgeois democracy in central Canada, professionalization of the bar, and formation of the institutional state. Central to codification was a profound ideological shift in Lower Canadian society that gave priority to exchange and individual property rights. Young examines the evolution of codification from its nationalist origins in the 1820s and 1830s into a Civil Code that was integral to Confederation and became a flagship of bilingualism in Quebec. The formation of the commission, the work of the codifiers, and the reaction of the anglophone minority and the Roman Catholic hierarchy are considered, as is the Code's meticulous blending of a conservative social vision with the principles of freedom of property
In its corporate capacity the Seminary of Montreal as a business institution, 1816-1876 by Brian J Young( Computer File )
8 editions published in 1986 in English and held by 872 libraries worldwide
Since the 1660s, the Seminary of Montreal -- a French, male religious community -- had been an integral part of the merchant, seigneurial, and clerical elite that dominated Montreal. Its significance in pre-industrial society was strengthened by its role as seigneur of Montreal Island and titular parish priest. The Seminary survived the British conquest, but came under increasing attack in the early nineteenth century from industrial producers and large capitalists landlords who resented the Seminary's seigneurial expropriations. By the 1830s, anticlerical elements in the peasantry and other popular classes had joined in the attack
Respectable burial Montreal's Mount Royal Cemetery by Brian J Young( file )
7 editions published between 2003 and 2008 in English and held by 744 libraries worldwide
"Respectable Burial is a social history of death, burial, and Montreal's Mount Royal Cemetery. A place of great beauty, the Mount Royal Cemetery was an inspiration for Frederick Law Olmstead's adjacent Mount Royal Park and played a part in the development of the city of Montreal. Brian Young shows how the history of the Mount Royal Cemetery mirrors the evolving social makeup, changing mores, and tragic events of what was long Canada's largest city. He examines the changes in the cemetery's landscaping, architecture, and use and shows how, in its evolution from a rural burying ground founded by Montreal's Protestant elite to an urban cemetery, Mount Royal Cemetery has introduced Montreal to new customs and sensibilities from Jewish, Chinese, Greek Orthodox, Buddhist, and other communities."--BOOK JACKET
