In Gluck's opera the gods have second thoughts, and Iphigénie is banished to Tauris, where 15 years later Iphigénie en Tauride begins. She is now Diana's high priestess, unaware of her family's tragic events withing the past 15 years. It is her job to sacrifice any strangers. Her brother Oreste and his friend Pylade are shipwrecked and Iphigénie spends the rest of the opera trying to avoid sacrificing them before Diana comes to her rescue

Gluck : an eighteenth-century portrait in letters and documents by Patricia Howard( Book )
5 editions published in 1995 in English and held by 14 libraries worldwide
Celebrated today for his historical significance as the one composer who did most to effect the transition between baroque and classical opera, Christoph Willibald Gluck (1714-1787) was, in his lifetime, both controversial and colourful. The documents portray a man of enormous physical energy, relish for good food and good company, and passion for his art. Patricia Howard draws on a variety of contemporary sources in an attempt to construct a portrait of one of the most interesting musicians of the eighteenth century. The basis of the book is the body of letters to and from Gluck. Also included are a wealth of factual documents and informal anecdotes, not easily accessible in the original German, French, or Italian, and almost none of which has ever been translated. The material has been arranged with the aim of providing readers with a lively, continuous narrative of Gluck's life, while at the same time indicating the principal locations of the published and unpublished sources
Gluck and the opera; a study in musical history by Ernest Newman( Book )
6 editions published between 1895 and 1976 in English and held by 9 libraries worldwide
Early in his long career, the self-taught English music critic Ernest Newman (1868-1959) wrote this influential account of Gluck's life and musical achievements in relation to the intellectual life of the eighteenth century. First published in 1895, Gluck and the Opera traces the composer's ideas and his efforts to move opera forward after a period of stagnation. Musicians, thinkers and satirists had been writing for generations about the need to reform the opera, but it was Gluck who brought about far-reaching changes that paved the way for Mozart, Weber and Wagner. His most notable innovation was the fusing of the Italian and French operatic traditions. The first part of the book is a chronological account of Gluck's eventful career, which took him all over Europe but was centred on Paris and Vienna. The second part deals with Gluck in his broader cultural and intellectual context, and lists his works
