Capitalism and modern social theory : an analysis of the writings of Marx, Durkheim and Max Weber by Anthony Giddens( Book )
92 editions published between 1971 and 2013 in 3 languages and held by 1,709 libraries worldwide
Giddens's analysis of the writings of Marx, Durkheim and Weber has become the classic text for any student seeking to understand the three thinkers who established the basic framework of contemporary sociology. The first three sections of the book, based on close textual examination of the original sources, contain separate treatments of each writer. The author demonstrates the internal coherence of their respective contributions to social theory. The concluding section discusses the principal ways in which Marx can be compared with the other two authors, and discusses misconceptions of some conventional views on the subject (source : site de l'éditeur)
The consequences of modernity by Anthony Giddens( Book )
119 editions published between 1990 and 2015 in 5 languages and held by 1,634 libraries worldwide
In this major theoretical statement, the author offers a new and provocative interpretation of the institutional transformations associated with modernity. We do not as yet, he argues, live in a post-modern world. Rather the distinctive characteristics of our major social institutions in the closing period of the twentieth century express the emergence of a period of 'high modernity, ' in which prior trends are radicalised rather than undermined. A post-modern social universe may eventually come into being, but this as yet lies 'on the other side' of the forms of social and cultural organization which currently dominate world history. In developing an account of the nature of modernity, Giddens concentrates upon analyzing the intersections between trust and risk, and security and danger, in the modern world. Both the trust mechanisms associated with modernity and the distinctive 'risk profile' it produces, he argues, are distinctively different from those characteristic of pre-modern social orders. This book build upon the author's previous theoretical writings, and will be of fundamental interest to anyone concerned with Gidden's overall project. However, the work covers issues which the author has not previously analyzed and extends the scope of his work into areas of pressing practical concern. This book will be essential reading for second year undergraduates and above in sociology, politics, philosophy, and cultural studies
Runaway world : how globalization is reshaping our lives by Anthony Giddens( Book )
63 editions published between 1999 and 2005 in 3 languages and held by 1,568 libraries worldwide
"In Runaway World, leading social commentator Anthony Giddens shows how globalization impacts every human on earth. Giddens examines the global marketplace, but goes beyond a conventional economic approach to look at more universal issues like family, risk, tradition, and democracy. Runaway World describes how changing currents in the international seas of finance are destabilizing countries, and how most people (and their governments) aren't prepared to deal with an ever-accelerating capitalism and Americanization of culture. Giddens finds the changes largely positive - liberating women, spreading democracy, and creating new wealth - but acknowledges the hazards of so much money crossing so many borders and distant cultures colliding."--Jacket
The constitution of society : outline of the theory of structuration by Anthony Giddens( Book )
84 editions published between 1984 and 2013 in English and German and held by 1,367 libraries worldwide
Anthony Giddens has been in the forefront of developments in social theory for the past decade. In The Constitution of Society he outlines the distinctive position he has evolved during that period and offers a full statement of a major new perspective in social thought, a synthesis and elaboration of ideas touched on in previous works but described here for the first time in an integrated and comprehensive form. A particular feature is Giddens's concern to connect abstract problems of theory to an interpretation of the nature of empirical method in the social sciences. In presenting his own i

A contemporary critique of historical materialism by Anthony Giddens( Book )
86 editions published between 1981 and 2013 in 4 languages and held by 1,229 libraries worldwide
The social sciences have long been based upon contrasts drawn between the 'militaristic' societies of the past, and the 'capitalist' or 'industrial' societies of the present. But how valid are such contrasts, given that the current era is one stamped by the impact of war and by the intensive development of sophisticated weaponry? In setting out to address this and similar questions, this book investigates issues that have been substantially neglected by those working in sociology and social theory. Anthony Giddens offers a sociological analysis of the nature of the modern nation-state and its association with the means of waging war. His analysis is connected in a detailed way to problems that have traditionally preoccupied sociologists - the impact of capitalism and industrialism upon social development in the modern period. The result is a theory both of the institutional parameters of modernity and of the nature of international relations. The book is a sequel to the author's much discussed Contemporary Critique of Historical Materialism. The framework of social theory outlined in that work is here elucidated in a systematic and thorough-going fashion. The novel and provocative ideas which the author develops will interest those working in a wide variety of disciplines: sociology, politics, geography and international affairs. -- Publisher summary
Selected writings by Émile Durkheim( Book )
35 editions published between 1972 and 2010 in English and held by 1,226 libraries worldwide
This is the only collection of Durkheim's writings to draw upon the whole body of his work. Many of the texts in the book are here translated for the first time. Dr. Giddens takes his selections from a wide variety of sources and includes a number of items from untranslated writings in the Revue Philosophique, Année Sociologique and from L'évolution pedagogue en France. Selections from previously translated writings have been checked against the originals and amended or re-translated where necessary. Dr. Giddens arranges his selections thematically rather than chronologically. However, extracts from all phases of Durkheim's intellectual career are represented, giving the date of their first publication, which makes the evolution of his thought easily traceable. In his introduction Dr. Giddens discusses phases in the interpretation of Durkheim's thought, as well as the main themes in his work, with an analysis of the effects of his thinking on modern sociology. The book is for students at any level taking courses in sociology, social anthropology and social theory, for whom Durkheim is one of the major writers studied

The transformation of intimacy : sexuality, love, and eroticism in modern societies by Anthony Giddens( Book )
71 editions published between 1992 and 2013 in 3 languages and held by 1,135 libraries worldwide
"The sexual revolution: an evocative term, but what meaning can be given to it today? How does 'sexuality' come into being and what connections does it have with the changes that have affected personal life on a more general plane? In answering these questions, Anthony Giddens disputes many of the dominant interpretations of the role of sexuality in modern culture. The emergence of what the author calls plastic sexuality - sexuality freed from its intrinsic relation to reproduction - is analysed in terms of the long-term development of the modern social order and social influences of the last few decades. Giddens argues that the transformation of intimacy, in which women have played the major part, holds out the possibility of a radical democratization of the personal sphere." "This book will appeal to a large general audience as well as being essential reading for students and professionals."--Jacket

Modernity and self-identity : self and society in the late modern age by Anthony Giddens( Book )
18 editions published between 1991 and 2010 in English and held by 1,044 libraries worldwide
"This major study develops a new account of modernity and its relation to the self. Building upon the ideas set out in The Consequences of Modernity, Giddens argues that 'high' or 'late' modernity is a post traditional order characterised by a developed institutional reflexivity. In the current period, the globalising tendencies of modern institutions are accompanied by a transformation of day-to-day social life having profound implications for personal activities. The self becomes a 'reflexive project', sustained through a revisable narrative of self identity. The reflexive project of the self, the author seeks to show, is a form of control or mastery which parallels the overall orientation of modern institutions towards 'colonising the future'. Yet it also helps promote tendencies which place that orientation radically in question - and which provide the substance of a new political agenda for late modernity. In this book Giddens concerns himself with themes he has often been accused of unduly neglecting, including especially the psychology of self and self-identity. The volumes are a decisive step in the development of his thinking, and will be essential reading for students and professionals in the areas of social and political theory, sociology, human geography and social psychology"--Provided by publisher

Studies in social and political theory by Anthony Giddens( Book )
30 editions published between 1977 and 2015 in English and Undetermined and held by 730 libraries worldwide
The studies which comprise this book are essentially organized around a critical encounter with European social theory in its ''classical period'' - i.e. from the middle years of the nineteenth century until the First World War - and have the aim of working out some of the implications of that encounter for the position and prospects of the social sciences today. The issues involved relate to the following series of problems: method and epistemology; social development and transformation; the origins of ''sociology'' in nineteenth-century social theory; and the status of social science as crit
