Ovid (Publius Ovidius Naso, 43 BCE-17 CE), born at Sulmo, studied rhetoric and law at Rome. Later he did considerable public service there, and otherwise devoted himself to poetry and to society. Famous at first, he offended the emperor Augustus and was banished to the cold and primitive town of Tomis on the Black Sea. He continued writing poetry, a kindly man, leading a temperate life. He died in exile. One of his few surviving works, the Fasti is a poetic treatment of the Roman year of which Ovid finished only half. It is believed that Ovid left the Fasti incomplete when he was exiled to Tomis

JACKET -- PLUTARCH (Plutarchus, c. A.D. 45-120), was born at Chaeronea in Boeotia in central Greece, studied philosophy at Athens, and, after coming to Rome as a teacher in philosophy, was given consular rank by the emperor Trajan and a procuratorship in Greece by Hadrian. Married and father of one daughter and four sons, he appears as a man of kindly character and independent thought. Studious and learned, he wrote on many subjects. Most popular have always been the 46 Parallel Lives, biographies planned to be ethical examples in pairs (in each pair one Greek person and one similar Roman), though the last four lives are single. All are invaluable sources of our knowledge of the lives and characters of Greek and Roman statesmen or soldiers or orators. Plutarch's many other varied extant works about 60 in number, are known as 'Moral Essays' or 'Moral Works'. They are of high literary value, besides being of great use to people interested in philosophy, ethics and religion

The belief in immortality and the worship of the dead by James George Frazer( Book )
56 editions published between 1913 and 2013 in English and Chinese and held by 704 libraries worldwide
This 1913 volume discusses several religions whereby believers worship the dead both in hopes that the dead will bless their futures and in hopes that the dead will rise up to bless the living. This concept of the undead or dead rising again is present in some capacity in many religions, even mainstream ones like Christianity (i.e. the resurrection). This volume highlights those beliefs among the Aborigines in Australia, New Guinea and Melanesia

Totemism and exogamy, a treatise on certain early forms of superstition and society by James George Frazer( Book )
52 editions published between 1910 and 2011 in English and held by 618 libraries worldwide
This classic four-volume series -from a pioneering ethnographer, first published in 1910- remains a foundational work of comparative mythology and religion for scholars and armchair anthropologists alike. Exploring the interconnections between myth and ritual in how and whom we may marry -as group marriage gave way to individual marriage- questions about religion and social structure became intertwined. In any case, this is a fascinating look at the social underpinnings common to all peoples around the globe. Volume 1 features a reprint of Frazer's groundbreaking 1887 work Totemism - covering the religious side of totemism ; individual totems ; sex totems ; and more -as well as additional hard-to-find essays by the author. Then begins Frazer's ethnographic survey of totemism, here covering totemism in Australia. Volume II continues Frazer's ethnographic survey of totemism, here covering totemism in the South Pacific, India and Africa. Volume III continues Frazer's ethnographic survey of totemism, here covering totemism in the United States, Canada and Central and South America, with a special emphasis on the guardian spirits and secret societies of American Indian tribes. Volume IV includes the author's summary and conclusion, errata, maps, and the index to the full work -- 4e de couverture
