Ethics by Benedictus de Spinoza( Livre )
615 editions published between 1677 and 2010 in 26 languages and held by 2,487 libraries worldwide
"Published shortly after his death in 1677, Ethics is undoubtedly Spinoza?s greatest work?a fully cohesive philosophical system that strives to provide a coherent picture of reality and to comprehend the meaning of an ethical life. Following a logical step-by-step format, it defines in turn the nature of God, the mind, human bondage to the emotions, and the power of understanding, moving from a consideration of the eternal to speculate upon humanity?s place in the natural order, freedom, and the path to attainable happiness. A powerful work of elegant simplicity, Ethics is a brilliantly insightful consideration of the possibility of redemption through intense thought and philosophical reflection."--Cover, p. 4.
A theologico-political treatise. Part 1 by Benedictus de Spinoza( Livre )
321 editions published between 1670 and 2009 in 21 languages and held by 1,661 libraries worldwide
Among the various epithets that greeted the publication of Spinoza's Theological-Political Treatise (henceforth the TTP) in 1670 were "harmful and vile," "most pernicious," "intolerably unrestrained," "subversive," "blasphemous," "diabolical," and "Atheistic." [This text] to the treatise makes it quite clear that the TTP is a polemical, political, indeed personal book, despite the paucity of references to either contemporary events or his own life. Spoinoza is quite explicit that this is no abstract ivory-tower treatise in philosophy, as his more famous work the "Ethics" has seemed to its superficial readers. The TTP is openly a political and theological tract aimed at solving several specific practical issues facing contemporary Dutch society, in whose midst Spinora had been born and in which he lived all his life, never leaving its borders, even for a vacation or visit. It also contains a response to an important event, indeed a turning point, in Spinoza's own life, his excommunication from the Jewish community of Amsterdam in 1656.-Introd.
