The divine comedy of Dante Alighieri by Dante Alighieri( Book )
104 editions published between 1891 and 2010 in English and Undetermined and held by 3,077 libraries worldwide
The "Divine Comedy" was entitled by Dante himself merely "Commedia," meaning a poetic composition in a style intermediate between the sustained nobility of tragedy, and the popular tone of elegy. The word had no dramatic implication at that time, though it did involve a happy ending. The poem is the narrative of a journey down through Hell, up the mountain of Purgatory, and through the revolving heavens into the presence of God. In this aspect it belongs to the two familiar medieval literary types of the Journey and the Vision. It is also an allegory, representing under the symbolism of the stages and experiences of the journey, the history of a human soul, painfully struggling from sin through purification to the Beatific Vision

The correspondence of Thomas Carlyle and Ralph Waldo Emerson, 1834-1872 by Thomas Carlyle( Book )
41 editions published between 1883 and 2003 in English and held by 913 libraries worldwide
The decade from 1820 to 1830 was a period of unusual dulness in English thought and imagination. All the great literary reputations belonged to the beginning of the century. "I have had no word from you for a long space. You wrote me a letter from Scotland after the death of your wife's mother, and full of pity for me also; and since, I have heard nothing. I confide that all has gone well and prosperously with you; that the iron Puritan is emerging from the Past, in shape and stature as he lived; and you are recruited by sympathy and content with your picture; and that the sure repairs of time and love and active duty have brought peace to the orphan daughter's heart. - Publisher

The New life of Dante Alighieri by Dante Alighieri( Book )
53 editions published between 1859 and 2007 in English and held by 800 libraries worldwide
"New Life is Dante's account of his lifelong muse Beatrice, an unobtainable woman who predeceased him by many years, but inspired the most beautiful poetry of his youth." "From his first meeting with her, dressed modestly but strikingly in crimson, Dante sensed that his life would never be quite the same again. The story of his attachment follows: his helpless emotional and physical reactions to her, his strange visions, and his desperate subterfuges, together with all the moving sonnets and canzoni that 'his gracious lady' inspired. At once a subtle spiritual allegory and a moving portrait of the youthful love that can afflict us all, New Life is the acknowledged masterpiece of Dante's early life, prefiguring in many ways both the poetic fruition of The Divine Comedy and the modern novel form." --Book Jacket
