This revised and updated edition of the pathbreaking report on the global AIDS epidemic outlines the strategic role that government must play in slowing the spread of HIV and mitigating the impact of AIDS. Drawing on the knowledge accumulated in the 17 years since the virus that causes AIDS was first identified, the report highlights policies that are most likely to be effective in managing the epidemic. These include early actions to minimize the spread of the virus, aiming preventive interventions at high risk groups, and evaluating measures that would assist households affected by AIDS according to the same standards applied to other health issues. This revised edition should be a valuable resource for public health, policymakers, researchers, and anyone with an interest in this devastating global health crisis
Large mines and the community socioeconomic and environmental effects in Latin America, Canada, and Spain by Gary McMahon( file )
27 editions published between 2001 and 2009 in English and Spanish and held by 1,794 libraries worldwide
"For centuries, communities have been founded or shaped based upon their access to natural resources and today, in our globalizing world, major natural resource developments are spreading to more remote areas. Mining operations are a good example: they have a profound impact on local communities and are often the first industry in a remote region. However, whereas an enormous amount has been written about the macroeconomic effects of the mining industry, there has been practically no in-depth analysis of the comprehensive effects of large mines on their host communities, especially in developing countries." "In this book, researchers from Bolivia, Chile, and Peru present and analyze the environmental, cultural, and socioeconomic effects of large mining operations in their respective countries, as well as the processes that led to the observed effects. The book also presents a case study of the longest continually operating mine in the world, the Almaden mercury mine in Spain, and an overview of the experience of mining communities in Canada, one of the most important mining countries of the 20th century. A synthesis chapter draws together recommendations for best practice, intended to provide guidance to communities, companies, and governments for future and ongoing mining and other natural resource developments." "Interested readers will include individuals involved in local community development (including those in nongovernmental, bilateral, and multilateral agencies), mining company officials, staff of government mining and development agencies, and academics and researchers in economic, social, environmental, and natural resource issues."--Jacket

The greening of economic policy reform by Jeremy J Warford( file )
17 editions published between 1996 and 1997 in English and held by 1,632 libraries worldwide
Annotation The economywide policy reform programs that have been undertaken in developing countries in recent years often address macroeconomic problems with little or no regard for their environmental impact, be it positive or negative. This book and its companion volume of case studies demonstrate that there are significant payoffs from a greater understanding of such impacts. The case studies, summarized in Volume I and presented in full in Volume II, provide empirical evidence of the links between macroeconomic policies and the environment and reflect a wide range of country situations and environmental problems: air pollution issues in Poland and Sri Lanka; deforestation and land degradation in Costa Rica; migration and deforestation in the Philippines; overgrazing of agricultural lands in Tunisia; overcultivation in Ghana; water resource depletion in Morocco; and wildlife management in Zimbabwe. The volumes also show the variety of analytical methods used to identify the linkages between policy actions and their environmental impacts. Also available: Volume I (ISBN 0-8213-3477-8) Stock no. 13477.Of related interest: Environmental Impacts of Macroeconomic and Sectoral Policies (ISBN 0-8213-3225-2) Stock no. 13225

Globalization and its relation to poverty reduction and development is not well understood. The book identifies the ways in which globalization can overcome poverty or make it worse. The book defines the big historical trends, identifies main global flows - trade, finance, aid, migration, and ideas - and examines how each can contribute to undermine economic development. By considering what helps and what does not, the book presents policy recommendations to make globalization more effective as a vehicle for shared growth and prosperity. Globalization, growth, and poverty building an inclusive world economy by Paul Collier( file )
15 editions published between 2001 and 2002 in English and held by 1,449 libraries worldwide
Globalization is a powerful force for poverty reduction as societies and economies around the world are becoming more integrated. Although this international integration presents tremendous opportunities for developing countries, it also has raised concerns about rising inequality, shifting power, and cultural uniformity. This report assesses the impact of globalization and addresses the ensuing anxieties. It proposes an agenda for action aimed at mitigating the risks that globalization potentially generates, while maximizing the opportunities for the poor.--Publisher description

Adjustment in Africa reforms, results, and the road ahead by World Bank( file )
17 editions published between 1993 and 1997 in English and held by 1,273 libraries worldwide
To reverse the economic decline that began in the 1970s, many sub-Saharan African countries have undertaken efforts to restructure their economies. This has included liberalizing trade, deregulating markets and prices, privatizing public enterprises, and strengthening management of the financial and public sectors. Implementation has been uneven in different countries, and even those countries that have attempted major reforms have not achieved poicies that are considered sound by international standards. A key finding of this book is is that improving policies paid off in higher GDR and sectoral growth rates, which are vital to reducing poverty; but in countries where policies deteriorated, economic performance worsened.; Despite the importance of reforming economic policies, it is not enough, and countries need to invest more in human capital and infrastructure, expand their institutional capacity and develop better governance. This is the second title in the World Bank Policy Research Reports (the first was the East Asian Miracle 1993)
