An enquiry concerning human understanding by David Hume( Book )
488 editions published between 1748 and 2014 in 20 languages and held by 8,872 libraries worldwide
Now one of the most widely read works in philosophy, David Hume's An Enquiry concerning Human Understanding (1748) introduced his philosophy to a broad educated readership. In it he gives an elegant and accessible presentation of strikingly original and challenging views about the limited powers of human understanding, the attractions of skepticism, the compatibility of free will and determinism, and weaknesses in the foundations of religion. In this volume, an authoritative new version of the text is enhanced by detailed explanatory notes, a glossary of terms, a full list of references, and a section of supplementary readings

The eighteenth-century Scottish philosopher's classic work on human understanding and morals
Dialogues concerning natural religion by David Hume( Book )
368 editions published between 1779 and 2015 in 14 languages and held by 6,818 libraries worldwide
"David Hume's Dialogues concerning Natural Religion, first published in 1779, is one of the most influential works in the philosophy of religion and the most artful instance of philosophical dialogue since the dialogues of Plato. It presents a fictional conversation between a skeptic, an orthodox Christian, and a Newtonian theist concerning evidence for the existence of an intelligent cause of nature based on observable features of the world. This new edition presents it together with several of Hume's other, shorter writings about religion, and with brief selections from the work of Pierre Bayle, who influenced both Hume's views on religion and the dialectical style of the Dialogues. The volume is completed by an introduction which sets the Dialogues in its philosophical and historical contexts."--BOOK JACKET
The history of England : from the invasion of Julius Caesar to the Revolution in 1688 by David Hume( Book )
578 editions published between 1688 and 2010 in 5 languages and held by 4,875 libraries worldwide
David Hume's great, enduring reputation in philosophy tends to obscure the fact that, among his contemporaries, his History of England was a more successful work. The History covers almost 1,800 years. Hume saw English history as an evolution from a government of will to a government of law. Advanced in Hume's masterly prose, this argument continues to make the History a valuable study for the modern reader. This Liberty Fund edition is based on the edition of 1778, the last to contain corrections by Hume. The typography has been modernized for ease of reading. Hume's own index to the entire work may be found at the conclusion of volume VI
The natural history of religion by David Hume( Book )
137 editions published between 1793 and 2014 in 9 languages and held by 3,399 libraries worldwide
"A Dissertation on the Passions and The Natural History of Religion were first published in 1757 in a volume entitled Four Dissertations, the last philosophical work written by Hume. The Natural History is an original work on religion as a natural phenomenon. It discusses ways in which human nature gives rise to religious belief and devotion. It is the only major work devoted exclusively to the subject of religion that Hume lived to see through the press himself. In his Dissertation on the Passions, Hume revisits his theory of the passions first presented in Book 2 of A Treatise of Human Nature. He identifies the issues of chief importance to him and clarifies and revises many passages in the Treatise." "The last edition of both works seen through the press by Hume appeared in 1772. It provides the copy-text for the present edition, but all substantive changes to the text planned by Hume before his death are taken into account. The editor's historical introduction discusses the genesis, revision, publishing history, and reception of these works, which went into nine editions at the author's hand. Annotations provide information about Hume's sources, allusions, citations, and terminology. Biographical sketches of all of the individuals mentioned by Hume in the work are supplied in a separate appendix. Two bibliographies list the works cited by Hume and by the editor, and a bibliographical history of work on the passions is provided. Hume's original index to these texts is reproduced, and a separate, comprehensive index is provided by the editor. The critical apparatus charts all substantive variations between editions and reports all editorial revisions."--BOOK JACKET

This edition contains the thirty-nine essays included in Essays, Moral, and Literary, that made up Volume I of the 1777 posthumous Essays and Treatises on Several Subjects. It also includes ten essays that were withdrawn or left unpublished by Hume for various reasons. The two most important were deemed too controversial for the religious climate of his time.
