The problems of philosophy by Bertrand Russell( Book )
511 editions published between 1900 and 2017 in 14 languages and held by 3,843 libraries worldwide
Bertrand Russell was one of the greatest logicians since Aristotle, and one of the most important philosophers of the past two hundred years. As we approach the 125th anniversary of the Nobel laureate's birth, his works continue to spark debate, resounding with unmatched timeliness and power. The Problems of Philosophy, one of the most popular works in Russell's prolific collection of writings, has become core reading in philosophy. Clear and accessible, this little book is an intelligible and stimulating guide to those problems of philosophy which often mistakenly lead to its status as too lofty and abstruse for the lay mind. Focusing on problems he believes will provoke positive and constructive discussion, Russell concentrates on knowledge rather than metaphysics, steering the reader through his famous 1910 distinction between "knowledge by acquaintance and knowledge by description," and introducing important theories of Descartes, Kant, Hegel, Hume, Locke, Plato, and others to lay the foundation for philosophical inquiry by general readers and scholars alike

The ABC of relativity by Bertrand Russell( Book )
267 editions published between 1925 and 2016 in 7 languages and held by 2,802 libraries worldwide
Ask a dozen people to name a genius and the odds are that 'Einstein' will spring to their lips. Ask them the meaning of 'relativity' and few of them will be able to tell you what it is. The basic principles of relativity have not changed since Russell first published his lucid guide for the general reader. The ABC of Relativity is Bertrand Russell's most brilliant work of scientific popularization. With marvelous lucidity he steers the reader who has no knowledge of maths or physics through the subtleties of Einstein's thinking. In easy, assimilable steps, he explains the theories of special and general relativity and describes their practical application to, amongst much else, discoveries about gravitation and the invention of the hydrogen bomb

Religion and science by Bertrand Russell( Book )
174 editions published between 1935 and 2016 in 6 languages and held by 2,330 libraries worldwide
In this timely work, Russell, philosopher, agnostic, mathematician, and renowned peace advocate, offers a brief yet insightful study of the conflicts between science and traditional religion during the last four centuries. Examining accounts in which scientific advances clashed with Christian doctrine or biblical interpretations of the day, from Galileo and the Copernican Revolution, to the medical breakthroughs of anesthesia and inoculation, Russell points to the constant upheaval and reevaluation of our systems of belief throughout history. In turn, he identifies where similar debates between modern science and the Church still exist today. Michael Ruse's new introduction brings these conflicts between science and theology up to date, focusing on issues arising after World War II

The impact of science on society by Bertrand Russell( Book )
152 editions published between 1900 and 2016 in 10 languages and held by 1,910 libraries worldwide
Many of the revolutionary effects of science, in terms of technology and in our outlook, are obvious enough. Russell saw in the 1950s, as is all too clear today, taht there are many negative aspects of scientific innovation. In The Impact of Science on Society, he argues that science offers the world greater well-being than it has ever known before on the condition that prosperity is dispersed, power is diffused, birth rates do not become too high and war is abolished. Russell sees that this is a tall order, but remains essentially optimistic. He imagines mankind in a 'race between human skill as to means and human folly as to ends', but believes human society will ultimately choose the path of Reason rather than the alternative of Death. -- from back cover
Power, a new social analysis by Bertrand Russell( Book )
156 editions published between 1938 and 2007 in 4 languages and held by 1,899 libraries worldwide
"The key to human nature that Marx found in wealth and Freud in sex, Bertrand Russell finds in power. Power, he argues, is man's ultimate goal, and is in its many guises the single most important element in the development of any society."
The analysis of mind by Bertrand Russell( Book )
226 editions published between 1921 and 2017 in 6 languages and held by 1,827 libraries worldwide
"This book has grown out of an attempt to harmonize two different tendencies, one in psychology, the other in physics, with both of which I find myself in sympathy, although at first sight they might seem inconsistent. On the one hand, many psychologists, especially those of the behaviourist school, tend to adopt what is essentially a materialistic position, as a matter of method if not of metaphysics. They make psychology increasingly dependent on physiology and external observation, and tend to think of matter as something much more solid and indubitable than mind. Meanwhile the physicists, especially Einstein and other exponents of the theory of relativity, have been making "matter" less and less material. Their world consists of "events," from which "matter" is derived by a logical construction. I think that what has permanent value in the outlook of the behaviourists is the feeling that physics is the most fundamental science at present in existence. But this position cannot be called materialistic, if, as seems to be the case, physics does not assume the existence of matter."--
Mysticism and logic : and other essays by Bertrand Russell( Book )
196 editions published between 1917 and 2017 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,725 libraries worldwide
"As an analytical philosopher, Russell's work focuses on the use of logic and science to explore philosophical ideas. And, conversely, he uses philosophy to study scientific systems and scientific inquiry. He opens the book with 'Mysticism and logic, ' a discussion of the two major impulses in human and philosophical thought. Here he makes his case for the importance and fundamental necessity for his brand of philosophy. These essays are technical in nature, but students in philosophy and dedicated readers will receive a wealth of knowledge for their efforts"--Jacket flap
In praise of idleness and other essays by Bertrand Russell( Book )
141 editions published between 1935 and 2016 in 7 languages and held by 1,562 libraries worldwide
"Intolerance and bigotry lie at the heart of all human suffering. So claims Bertrand Russell at the outset of In Praise of Idleness, a collection of essays in which he espouses the virtues of cool reflection and free enquiry, a voice of calm in a world of maddening unreason. With characteristic clarity and humour, Russell surveys the social and political consequences of his beliefs. From a devastating critique of the ancestry of fascism to a vehement defence of "useless" knowledge, with consideration given to everything from insect pests to the human soul, In Praise of Idleness is a tour de force that only Bertrand Russell could perform."--BOOK JACKET
