Gravitational lenses by P Schneider( Book )
24 editions published between 1965 and 2010 in English and Undetermined and held by 404 libraries worldwide
This systematic presentation of the current status and problems of the theory and observations of gravitational lensing starts from the equations of classical electrodynamics and general relativity, and develops for the first time gravitational lens theory from first principles. Beginning with simple models and basic properties of the lens mapping, the book proceeds to more complicated recent analytical and numerical treatments, thereby highlighting the prominent role played by lensing statistics in the interpretation of high-redshift objects. A detailed description of microlensing is given. The potential role of gravitational lenses as astronomical tools, for example, to determine the masses of cosmic objects and the scale of the universe and as natural telescopes, is pointed out. On the observational side, details of several known multiple QSOs, radio rings and luminous arcs, and the difficulties of observation and verification of lens systems are summarized. The basics of catastophe theory, to the extent that it concerns singularities of plane maps, are derived and some techniques for numerical treatments of gravitational lensing are listed. This book can be viewed as both textbook and research monograph
Ninth Texas Symposium on Relativistic Astrophysics by 1978, München> Texas Symposium on Relativistic Astrophysics. <9( Book )
9 editions published in 1980 in English and held by 301 libraries worldwide
Canonical gravity : from classical to quantum : proceedings of the 117th WE Heraeus Seminar held at Bad Honnef, Germany, 13-17 September 1993 by J Ehlers( Book )
19 editions published between 1994 and 2014 in English and German and held by 288 libraries worldwide
The search for a quantum gravity theory, a theory expected to combine the principles of general relativity and quantum theory, has led to some of the most deepest and most difficult conceptual and mathematical questions of modern physics. The present book, addressing these issues in the framework of recent versions of canonical quantization, is the first to present coherently the background for their understanding. Starting with an analysis of the structure of constrained systems and the problems of their quantization, it discusses the canonical formulation of classical relativity from different perspectives and leads to recent applications of canonical methods to create a quantum theory of gravity. The book aims to make accessible the most fundamental problems and to stimulate work in this field
Lectures in statistical physics by W. C Schieve( Book )
14 editions published in 1974 in English and held by 268 libraries worldwide
Einstein's field equations and their physical implications : selected essays in honour of Jürgen Ehlers by Bernd G Schmidt( Book )
18 editions published between 2000 and 2011 in English and held by 243 libraries worldwide
This book serves two purposes. The authors present important aspects of modern research on the mathematical structure of Einstein's field equations and they show how to extract their physical content from them by mathematically exact methods. The essays are devoted to exact solutions and to the Cauchy problem of the field equations as well as to post-Newtonian approximations that have direct physical implications. Further topics concern quantum gravity and optics in gravitational fields. The book addresses researchers in relativity and differential geometry but can also be used as additional reading material for graduate students
Relativistic gravity research with emphasis on experiments and observations : proceedings of the 81 WE-Heraeus-Seminar held at the Physikzentrum, Bad Honnef, Germany, 2-6 September 1991 by J Ehlers( Book )
13 editions published between 1992 and 2014 in English and German and held by 223 libraries worldwide
17 readable articles give a thorough and self-contained overview of recent developments in relativistic gravity research. The subjects covered are: gravitational lensing, the general relativistic n-body problem, observable effects in the solar system, gravitational waves and their interferometric detection, very-long-baseline interferometry, international atomic time, lunar laser- ranging measurements, measurement ofthe gravitomagnetic field of the Earth, fermion and boson stars and black holes with hair, rapidly rotating neutron stars, matter wave interferometry, and the laboratory test of Newton's law of gravity. Any scientist interested in experimentally or observatio- nally oriented relativistic gravity will read the book with profit. In addition, it is perfectly suited as a complementary text for courses on general relativity and relativistic astrophysics
Isolated gravitating systems in general relativity, Varenna on Lake Como, Villa Monastero, 28th June-10th July 1976 by International School of Physics "Enrico Fermi"( Book )
2 editions published in 1979 in English and held by 194 libraries worldwide
Special relativity : will it survive the next 101 years? by J Ehlers( Book )
19 editions published between 2001 and 2014 in English and held by 173 libraries worldwide
After a century of successes, physicists still feel the need to probe the limits of the validity of theories based on special relativity. Canonical approaches to quantum gravity, non-commutative geometry, string theory and unification scenarios predict tiny violations of Lorentz invariance at high energies. The present book, based on a recent seminar devoted to such frontier problems, contains reviews of the foundations of special relativity and the implications of Poincaré invariance as well as comprehensive accounts of experimental results and proposed tests. The book addresses, besides researchers in the field, everyone interested in the conceptual and empirical foundations of our knowledge about space, time and matter
Gravitation : Raum-Zeit-Struktur und Wechselwirkung ( Book )
13 editions published between 1987 and 1996 in German and Undetermined and held by 163 libraries worldwide
Space, time, matter by Hermann Weyl( Book )
14 editions published between 1988 and 1993 in German and held by 85 libraries worldwide
Das Studium von Hermann Weyls Raum . Zeit .
