Capital : a critique of political economy by Karl Marx( Book )
248 editions published between 1906 and 2016 in 4 languages and held by 5,382 libraries worldwide
From the Publisher: Capital, one of Marx's major and most influential works, was the product of thirty years close study of the capitalist mode of production in England, the most advanced industrial society of his day. This new translation of Volume One, the only volume to be completed and edited by Marx himself, avoids some of the mistakes that have marred earlier versions and seeks to do justice to the literary qualities of the work. The introduction is by Ernest Mandel, author of Late Capitalism, one of the only comprehensive attempts to develop the theoretical legacy of Capital
The eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Bonaparte by Karl Marx( Book )
489 editions published between 1869 and 2017 in 13 languages and held by 3,039 libraries worldwide
"The Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Napoleon was written between December 1851 and March 1852, and originally published in 1852 in Die Revolution, a German-language monthly magazine. The pamphlet shows Marx in his form as a social and political historian, treating actual historical events-those leading up to Louis Bonaparte's coup d'état of 2 December 1851-from the viewpoint of his materialist conception of history. The "Eighteenth Brumaire" refers to November 9, 1799 in the French Revolutionary Calendar-the day Louis Bonaparte's uncle Napoleon Bonaparte had made himself dictator by a coup d'état. The work is the source of one of Marx's most quoted statements, that history repeats itself, "the first as tragedy, then as farce"."--Publisher's website

Economic and philosophic manuscripts of 1844 by Karl Marx( Book )
205 editions published between 1845 and 2017 in 9 languages and held by 2,135 libraries worldwide
" ... Marx explains how, under capitalism, people rely on labor to live. In the past people could rely on nature itself for their natural needs; in modern society, if one wants to eat, one must work: it is only through money that one may survive. Thus [a person] becomes a slave to his wages. It is only through his work that he can find enough money to continue to live; but he doesn't simply live, he actually only survives, as a worker. Labor is only used to create more wealth, instead of achieving the fulfillment of human nature."
The civil war in France by Karl Marx( Book )

This book comprises Marx's three addresses to the International Working Men's Association, together with Engel's introductions, and several additional pieces of correspondence and related material. A modern introduction by Christopher Hitchens analyzes the attitude of these thinkers to the Commune, examines the nature of the Commune itself, and traces its impact on the Europe of 1871 and its significance for today. -- Book jacket

On religion by Karl Marx( Book )
58 editions published between 1955 and 2012 in 3 languages and held by 1,558 libraries worldwide
In this single volume is the best collection of writings on Religion by the two founding fathers of Communism. In it the reader will find the entire arsenal of ideas with which Marx and Engels hoped to explode the religious foundations of all previous societies. Yet also, in these writings - as Reinhold Niebuhr shows in his introduction- "are clues to that remarkable development of which many students have been made aware, of an irreligion transmuted into a new political religion, canonized precisely in the writings of Marx (and the later Lenin) as sacred scripture, and preached ... as the principles for a revolutionary reformation of the social order according to an immutable dogma
The poverty of philosophy by Karl Marx( Book )
109 editions published between 1884 and 2012 in English and German and held by 1,541 libraries worldwide
The Poverty of Philosophy was written as a response to Pierre-Joseph Proudhon's The Philosophy of Poverty. Although Marx greatly respected Proudhon, especially in his earlier days, this criticism of Proudhon's book disagrees with many of his points. Marx goes so far as to mock the success of Proudhon's career.?Marx's book contains?some seeds of his thoughts that would later be fully realized in Capital.?

Karl Marx by Richard P Appelbaum( Book )
39 editions published between 1934 and 1997 in 5 languages and held by 82 libraries worldwide
Overview: Isaiah Berlin's intellectual biography of Karl Marx has long been recognized as one of the best concise accounts of the life and thought of the man who had, in Berlin's words, a more "direct, deliberate, and powerful" influence on mankind than any other nineteenth-century thinker. A brilliantly lucid work of synthesis and exposition, the book introduces Marx's ideas and sets them in their context, explains why they were revolutionary in political and intellectual terms, and paints a memorable portrait of Marx's dramatic life and outsized personality. Berlin takes readers through Marx's years of adolescent rebellion and post-university communist agitation, the personal high point of the 1848 revolutions, and his later years of exile, political frustration, and intellectual effort. Critical yet sympathetic, Berlin's account illuminates a life without reproducing a legend. New features of this thoroughly revised edition include references for Berlin's quotations and allusions, Terrell Carver's assessment of the distinctiveness of Berlin's book, and a revised guide to further reading
