Church dogmatics : a selection by Karl Barth( Book )

The most important theological work of the 20th century in a new edition! Karl Barth's Church Dogmatics is one of the major theological works of the 20th century. The Swiss-German theologian Karl Barth (1886-1968) was the most original and significant Reformed theologian of the twentieth century. He was one of the central figures in the Confessing Church in Germany, which opposed the Nazi Regime. Barth began the Church Dogmatics in 1932 and continued working on its thirteen volumes until the end of his life. Barth's writings continue to guide and instruct the preaching and teaching of pastors and academics worldwide. The English translation was prepared by a team of scholars and edited by G. W. Bromiley and T. F. Torrance and published from 1936. A team of scholars and specialists at Princeton Theological Seminary have started revising the existing translation. The first step was the translation of Greek, Latin, Hebrew and French passages into English. The original is now presented alongside the English translation. This makes the work more reader friendly and accessible to the growing number of students who do not have a working knowledge of the ancient languages. This new edition with translations is presented for the first time in print. The new edition is presented in a new bigger format and broken down into 31 paperback volumes. - Publisher

This classic volume of Barth's essays was first published in 1924 under the title 'Das Wort Gottes und die Theologie'. In this brand new English edition all the critical apparatus is translated, each chapter including an explanatory passage giving general historical context and details of Barth's own biography. These essays represent the very best of Barth's work. Far from being superceded by the Church Dogmatics, indeed, a thorough understanding of the Church Dogmatics must presuppose a close knowledge of them. The style is vivid, deeply engaged and engaging, often expressionistic (making fre

A shorter commentary on Romans by Karl Barth( Book )
75 editions published between 1956 and 2007 in 8 languages and held by 865 libraries worldwide
This reissue of Barth's A Shorter Commentary on Romans links to the renewed interest today in a 'theological' interpretation of Scripture. In response to the modern preoccupation with what lies behind the text (the author's context), and to a postmodern preoccupation with what lies in front of the text (the reader's context), both theologians and biblical scholars are asking the following questions: 'What is the relationship between the biblical text, interpreter and God?' 'Can the Bible be read both as an historical document and as a text that speaks to us today, and if so, how can it do so?'
On religion : the revelation of God as the sublimation of religion by Karl Barth( Book )
8 editions published between 2006 and 2013 in English and held by 227 libraries worldwide
The study of Karl Barth has generally been excluded from religious studies departments in favour of more liberal theologians such as Tillich. For many years scholar Garrett Green has argued that there is no justification for this neglect. To support his theory that Barth can and should be studied as a religious theorist rather than just a theologian, Garrett Green presents a brand new translation of Paragraph (i.e. section) 17 of Karl Barth's Church Dogmatics prefaced by a detailed introduction to the text. This important new translation counters the idea that Barth rejected the notion of religion out of hand by correcting a number of errors in the original version that obscure Barth's central argument. In particular the crucial word, Aufhebung, in the title is translated here as sublimation rather than abolition. The translation will do better justice to the German original and will be more accessible to contemporary readers. Unlike the original version, all Greek, Latin and Hebrew citations are translated into English, and the NRSV is used for the Bible quotes rather than the King James. The translation is accompanied by a text by Garrett Green introducing the scholar and student to Barth as a religious theorist. The book concludes with appendices containing teaching materials and a summary of developed by the author in the classroom over years
