This is the most comprehensive look we have ever had of Escher's enigmatic life and his whole range of work. "Maurits Cornelis Escher was a truly unique artist whose vision was quite unlike anyone else's. To enter his world is to set foot into unknown and unsettling territory. Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898-1972) is one of the world's most admired modern artists and his engravings and lithographs immediately recognizable for their architectural explorations of infinity. From 1958 until his death in 1972, the Dutch artist wrote letters to his son George who had immigrated to Canada. The correspondence reproduced here - originally written in Dutch and translated into English - discusses Escher's work, including current projects, collaborative books on his art, the sale of his prints, and the production of various films on his life. The letters also make reference to the artist's health, his family and friends, his personal reading, current events and the celebrities, political officials and academics who came into contact with Escher over the course of his career notably F.D. Roosevelt, Stanley Kubrick and Dr. Arthur L. Loeb. Accompanying the letters are an introduction by George Escher, a selection of family photographs, and several full page colour plates of Escher's work

Renowned artist M.C. Escher is not a surrealist drawing us into his dream world, but an architect of perfectly impossible worlds who presents the structurally unthinkable as though it were a law of nature. Weird, beautiful, finely detailed illusions. -- Publisher's description

The world of M.C. Escher by M. C Escher( Book )
8 editions published between 1971 and 1988 in 3 languages and held by 54 libraries worldwide
In the extraordinary world of M.C. Escher time, space, and visual reality have been rearranged according to an ingenious logic - simultaneity of perspective is commonplace, space appears to be infinite, and positive and negative are interchangeable. Fascination is the result. For years, Escher's wood engravings and lithographs were prized by only a small group of admirers. Mathematicians and scientists marveled at his logic and precision, often using his prints to illustrate their theses. Collectors were charmed by his wit and uncanny ability to create fascinating Surrealistic worlds that delight the imagination and fool the eye. Yet today his designs, motifs, and constructed universes are justly famous - influencing everything from record-album covers and posters to textile prints and wallpaper. Escher's exquisite juxtapositions of light and dark in complex self-perpetuating patterns satisfy both modern man's fascination with the surreal and his need for order and balance. This volume explores the diversified appeal of Escher's prints, whose reach spans the fields of mathematics and poetry, science fiction and art history. The five essays, including one by Escher himself, are unique in that they are by scientists as well as art historians: G. W. Locher is professor of sociology at the University of Leyden, C. H. A. Broos is curator of prints at the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague, H. S. M. Coxeter is professor of mathematics at Toronto University, and J. L. Locher is curator of the Modern Art Department of the Gemeentemusuem in the Hague. A special color section has been included along with numerous working drawings and preparatory prints; the 300 illustrations afford the student and scholar a comprehensive view of Escher's total work, comprising a graphic catalogue that is at once technically masterful and compelling. -- from dust jacket
