In his review, Vincent Canby describes the film as, "Bernardo Bertolucci's very good, cerebrally tantalizing new film, Tragedy of a Ridiculous Man, the story of what may or may not be a terrorist kidnapping of the sort that has been making Italian headlines with increasing frequency in recent years.". ..."In a small Italian village, Primo runs a cheese factory, but one morning he witnesses his son kidnapped by terrorists. As the film progresses, he has two problems: paying the ransom the terrorists demand and trying to save his factory which might face bankruptcy. What's a businessman like him to do?" --Wikipedia

All eight are sitting on a terrace talking, while flashbacks and flashforwards fill in their past, present, and future relationships. Enrico is a burnt-out screenwriter, Amedeo is a self-made producer, Mario is a communist member of parliament who is having an affair with the married Giovanna and is otherwise having a hard time trying to tow the tough, virtuous line the party demands. Giovanna, as well as the other women on the terrace, have all the spirit of people looking forward to the future while the men have been there and found it wanting."--Eleanor Mannikka, All movie guide as seen on
