Rodin's art : the Rodin collection of the Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Center for Visual Arts at Stanford University by Albert E Elsen( Book )
8 editions published between 2002 and 2003 in English and Undetermined and held by 614 libraries worldwide
"The late Albert Elsen was the first American scholar to study seriously the work of the French sculptor Auguste Rodin, and the person most responsible for a revival of interest in the artist as a modern innovator - after years during which the sculpture had been dismissed as so much Victorian bathos. After a fortuitous meeting with the financier, philanthropist, and art collector B. Gerald Cantor, Elsen helped Cantor build a major collection of Rodin's work. A large part of this collection, consisting of more than two hundred works, was donated to Stanford University's museum by Mr. Cantor, who died in 1996. In size, Stanford's collection is surpassed only by the Musee Rodin in Paris and rivaled only by the collection in Philadelphia. In scope, the collection is unique in having been carefully selected to present a balanced view of Rodin's work throughout his life." "Rodin's Art encompasses a lifetime's thoughts on Rodin's career, surveying the artist's accomplishments throughout the detailed discussion of each object in the collection. Its essays on the formation of the collection, the reception of Rodin's work, and his casting techniques are invaluable. The other entries, arranged topically, include extensive discussion of Rodin's major projects."--Jacket

Auguste Rodin : drawings & watercolors by Antoinette Le Normand-Romain( Book )

"Auguste Rodin: Drawings & Watercolours presents an extensive panorama of Rodin's graphic work, from the 'black drawings' contemporaneous with the Gate of Hell to his great watercolour nudes. It reproduces hundreds of the most beautiful drawings held in the collection at the Musee Rodin, a considerable number of which are published here for the first time. Two in-depth essays analyse this body of work, one studying the complex relationships between Rodin's drawings and sculptures, the other the problems of attribution and the role of sensuality in his work." "Rodin's rich graphic oeuvre has until now been a little-known aspect of his art, yet is crucial to a full understanding of the great sculptor's work. This book will be essential reading for Rodin's many admirer's everywhere."--BOOK JACKET

Apropos Rodin by Jennifer Gough-Cooper( Book )
6 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 322 libraries worldwide
"Auguste Rodin rose from humble origins to become one of the most influential sculptors of all time. Regarded during his life as a Michelangelo of the modern age, Rodin mirrored the multiple facets of the human condition through the lifelike quality of the figures he portrayed, and challenged existing notions of form by considering details as finished works in a variety of different media. The indisputable influence of such masterpieces as The Thinker, Eternal Idol, The Kiss and The Burghers of Calais still reverberates today, almost one hundred years after Rodin's death." "In 1996 Jennifer Gough-Cooper's interest in photography was sparked by a chance visit to the Musee Rodin in Paris. There, in spacious rooms with high ceilings, Rodin's sculpture inhabits its own environment; light streams in from grand windows, breathing life into the stone. Jennifer Gough-Cooper's photographs capture qualities in the sculpture that are often not immediately apparent, revealing soft impressionist forms with a painterly quality."--Jacket

The greatest sculptor of the nineteenth century discusses his philosophy of life with a close friend in this fascinating and informative artistic testament. Auguste Rodin spoke candidly to his protǧ,̌ Paul Gsell, who recorded the master's thoughts not only about the technical secrets of his craft, but also about its aesthetic and philosophical underpinnings. Here is the real Rodin-relaxed, intimate, open, and charming-offering a wealth of observations on the relationship of sculpture to poetry, painting, theater, and music. He also makes perceptive comments on Rembrandt, Michelangelo, Raphael, and other great artists, and he shares revealing anecdotes about Hugo, Balzac, and others who posed for him. Seventy-six superb illustrations of the sculptor's works complement the text, including St John the Baptist Preaching, The Burghers of Calais, The Thinker, and many others, along with a selection of exuberant drawings and prints
