The whole country got excited by Houdini's campaign against faking spiritualists. He careened through the country, offering money for spirit contacts he couldn't duplicate by admitted magical chicanery. It was a heyday not only for Houdini but for the spirit-callers and there was an equally famous protagonist who thought the spirits could indeed be contacted, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. A photo at the front records a meeting between Houdini and Doyle and Houdini gives Doyle his own chapter. There's an earlier chapter on Daniel Dunglas Home, the English engineer of spectacular paranormal effects. Houdini raises hell with spiritualists who were giving their (usually paying) clients a vision of heavens to come, and shares the methods used to practice "fake" and sensational spiritualism. Houdini was nothing if not unrelenting. As a taste of things to come, he ends his introduction with the words: "Up to the present time everything that I have investigated has been the result of deluded brains."

The legendary magician and illusionist Harry Houdini turns a critical eye to the astonishing claims of those in his own profession. Using personal research and observations, Houdini reveals the cunning techniques employed by fire-eaters, sword swallowers, and other masters of deception to mystify and amaze audiences around the world. This classic skeptical work explores and exposes the methods of such "wonders" as "The Incombustible Spaniard," "Defiers of Poisonous Reptiles," and many others. Originally published in the 1920s, Miracle Mongers and Their Methods scrupulously examines the direct predecessors of modern psychics and mentalists

"Aspiring illusionists can learn from one of the world's greatest magicians with this facsimile of a 1922 book by Harry Houdini. The master sleight-of-hand artist explains how to use the simplest of props--sheets of paper-- to completely captivate audiences. Houdini's easy-to-follow directions, many of them accompanied by illustrations, are accessible to readers of all ages and skill levels. The manual consists of four parts: paper tricks, paper folding, paper tearing, and paper puzzles. The first section reveals the secrets behind such magic tricks as "The Dancing Sailor" and "The Spirit Communication." Subsequent sections offer guides to folding a bird, a bullfrog, a hat, and other traditional origami models and to carefully tearing paper to produce a ladder, a five-pointed star, a string of dancing skeletons, and other intricate figures. The final part presents several challenging paper puzzles based on geometric forms"--

This volume presents the best of those writings alongside little-known articles by Houdini on his own brand of deception: magic. Revealing the secrets of his signature tricks, including handcuff and rope escapes, and debunking the methods of his rivals, he proves himself to be just as clever and nimble a writer as he was a magician--and surprisingly free with trade secrets! All of which makes this unique selection of works both the ultimate anti-etiquette guide and proof that things are not always as they seem. In an exclusive introduction to this volume, Teller--magician, comedian, and silent sidekick of Penn Jillette--speaks up about the greatest magician of modern times

Is it true that a magician never reveals his secrets? In this rare 1922 gem, master illusionist Harry Houdini may not explain how to make an elephant disappear or how to perform fantastic acts of escape, but he does divulge dozens of terrific sleight-of-hand tricks and puzzles anyone can do with paper. Divided into four parts?paper tricks, paper folding, paper tearing, and paper puzzles?Houdini's Paper Magic is an accessible and easy-to-follow guide to all sorts of tricks with paper. In addition to magic like? The Traveling Paper Balls? and?The Spirit Communication,? Houdini delves into traditional origami such as?The Japanese Bird? and?The Bullfrog.? He also shows how paper?torn carefully and properly?can produce elegant and intricate structures such as a ladder, a trellis, and a fir tree. Finally, he offers a number of paper puzzles that will challenge the mind. Houdini's Paper Magic is a wonderful glimpse back into the history of the art of magic and essential for anyone interested in learning tricks and techniques from one of magic?s greatest conjurers
